since i spent hours reading this ill let ya know to save you time. this is pretty much what i have gathered.

      get 3.73s or 4.10s

get posi to go with it or your wasting your money... you wont hook

you get better acceleration but lower top speed (dont worry you wont get there anyway) and worse MPG

costs about 300 for gear installs, 200 for just the gears, 100-500 for a posi diff, 90 for an install kit, and 20-30 for fluid.

you cant install them yourself if your asking this question.

      thats pretty much it....

Re: Gears for a 1997 Auto?

Im getting 3.90 gears and and lsd installed in probably about 2 weeks time for 300$

        my total cost

        gears about $180
lsd $220 (but I got it brand new)
T/A girdle ($130) dont really need one, but I want to be safe when I take her to the track
        install $300 total.

if you wanna wait till I get my 3.90's in I'll tell ya how they are...

I don't think anyone really has them on here that I know of...they just came out not too long ago....

        1996 3800 Camaro - 13.43 @ 100.77 mph

Don't forget you will need a tune to correct the speedometer.

In running with about 300 dollars now.

what could i afford in parts. for my car.

i can save up and get em installed once i buy the parts.
I just need to know what gears to go with.
what all else i will need.

                What gears do you want?
Summit has thier own brand for around $130 a set, made by Richmond. 3.42,3.73 and 4.10. If you do allot of high way driving go with the 3.42's. If you want to launch hard from a dead stop 4.10's. Set up kits with all bearings run about $125.

I have heard 3.73's are the best way to go. Most of my driving is rural back roads and highways, interstates. Mostly backroads. :D

So what would you recomend and what all would i need?

I know the gears. but what else for install?
and can you link me to the summit ones.

You would also need a set up kit with bearings, gear oil, Posi carrier( if you don't already have one) and some one to install them.

I have 3.73's in my automatic car and the motor seems happy with them. Expect about 2500 RPM at 70 MPH.

Limited slip carrier. One that makes both back wheels spin.
