  • Questions on gears/LSD.

    Hey all,

I have a 98 firebird, and I'm thinking my next step is going to be gears. My problem is that a crack addict decided he didn't like my door and parked is rusted out honda in it. So I have no door codes anymore, and nothing in my glovebox.

I have no idea what gears are on this, and no idea whether or not I'd have an LSD or if it'd be a 2-stage or 3-stage. Highway, around 70mph I hover around 2100rpms.

I do have the original window sticker the original owner saved. The only thing of note it mentions is a bullet point "Tires, 235/55R16". I mention this because for the 1996's that was part of the Y87, but I've no idea if that could be a feature that could appear without Y87.

When I got the car, it had a single outlet muffler.

Please help me figure out what's on this car! It's been driving me nuts for months, as I'm thinking of doing the gears but I can't figure out what all I'll need.

2100 sounds low for 70 with 342s. I don't remember exactly what I'm at but i think it's around 23-2500. Easiest way to test for LSD is do a quick burn out and see how many black stripes you leave.
I've heard of non Y87 cars with dual exhaust, but all y87 cars should have had duals.

        Re: Questions on gears/LSD.

That single outlet muffler doesn't mean ****...there are V6 f-bodies that got 3.42s w/ no LSD or Y87 code.

Anyways, get the rear into the air. Set the trans into neutral, and rotate the DS, counting how many times it turns over, for the wheel to completely turn over. If it turns over a tiny bit more than 3 times, you have 3.08s...if it turns over nearly 3 and a half times, it's 3.42s.

To determine if it has a posi or not, just pop the cover and look

i found from his earlier posts he has an A4. 3.42's is the closest match for 70 mph at 2,100 rpm

I have an A4 with 3.08s and no LSD and i do about the same with rpms. 2100 at 70 sounds about right.

                Re: Questions on gears/LSD.

My car has every Y87 option without the code. If you still have the original VIN number you should be able to track it that way.

with 3.08's you should be around 76.

If you really want to know what you got you should pop the cover. Check for an LSD carrier and count the number of ring gear and pinion gear teeth.
