  • tranny interchange info needed!

    Can anyone tell me with certainty, whether a 4L60e out of a 3.8 95 f-body would interchange with a 4l60e in a 3.8, 97 f-body?

    Thanks guys,

      Thanks for the reply.

I just contacted a tranny rebuilder and asked them the question, this is what I was told by them:

"No A 95 would be a 1 piece case non bolt on and a 97 would have a bolt on bell. there would also be electronics issues between the two."

      Now I'm really confused,,,,lol!!

Tranny interchange problem, I thought I was going to read something about a botched surgery. Thank God. Oh and yeah it should bolt right up.

Hmmm... I thought 2000 was the first year of the bolt on bellhousing. Best bet would be to call a GM dealer.

Even with a bolt-on bell, shouldn't it still match the bolt pattern on the rear of the engine? I think the issues would be the electronics, but a 95 4L60E should interchange with 97 just fine. Almost positive 97's had a one-piece case, but in 98 they started with the two piece.

Since we're on the topic, how about a donor m5 from a 95 into a 98 m5- should be pretty standard right?

                Re: tranny interchange info needed!

yep. you'll just have to swap the bellhousings and clutch hydrualics from the 98 into the new one. that's the only difference.

Thanks for the help guys. What kind of electronic issues could I expect?

As far as electronic issues, I can't foresee there being any. The 1995 4L60e's had the same internals as the 1998's, and the tailshafts were the same, both had the same TCC solenoids...I don't think you'll have a problem. I'll check my rebuilding manualwhen I get home around 7:30..

Ok, I just received this from another big tranny shop. I guess this is the defining answer to my question:

"Well physically yes it will bolt up, but will it work, no. The electronics are what's different between the two. The 95 trans uses a pwm solenoid for 3-2 control valve while the 96 & up trans use a on-off style 3-2 control solenoid. You'll damage the pcm if you make that mistake. I hope I didn't lose you there!"

Just fyi for future information. Thanks to everyone for the help.

lol, just looked in my ATSG manual, and sure enough, that's the case.

I'm sure you could always swap the old solenoid for the newer style though... It should be right on the valve body...as long as the connectors are the same...

He's talking about my tranny, he's considering buying it..

You guys do realize that the tranny is from a 3.8 car, right? It was one of the few made at the end of 95.. Just want to make sure you aren't thinking of one from a 3.4 car.
The original motor blew on the car, so I picked up a low mile 3.8 motor from a junkyard, out of a 96 car, and everything worked perfect.. Did this difference with the solenoids change in 97?

No. I believe the solenoid change was 95 - 96. But i'm not 100% on that. If it was a 3.4 car, I'm pretty sure it would've had a different bolt pattern, wouldn't it?

Like I had said before, even if it had the different solenoid, you should be able to swap it for the new one relatively easily...

But why would there be a different noid setup for only a few thousand cars?

I guess I've just never heard of this before.
