y87 rear end the same as the z28?

Is the y87 rear end the exact same as what they used on the Z28's? I have a 96 v6 A4 rear disk brakes with the y87 package. Im doing an LT1 swap. I want to know if I will need to swap my rear end? Is it the same rear end they put on the 96 z28's ? I did a search, but I got conflicting answers. Thanks guys.

Being that you have an A4, you should have 3.42 gears. GU6 option code in your counsel. You would need to have the PCM programmed for that gear ratio. I'd use the axle after the swap.

Shhhh.... You have much to learn young n00blet. No 4th gen f-body EVER came from Ste. Therese with a numerically higher gear ratio than 3.42. Do a search, and you'll see.

Bull ****. The y87 package comes with 3.42 gears in an A4 car and 3.08's in a T5. GM would never put 3.73 gears in a production model car, it's just not efficient.

As for the question, I don't think it's the exact same rear but it very well could be. In 1996 y87 camaro's and firebird's came with Auburn LSD's and 3.42's in a GM 10-bolt. So to answer the question, the rear you have now should be more than enough for an LT1.

Yeah, mine has 3.42 gears. Good, I was hoping I wouldnt have to change it out. My buddy was trying to get me to look for a posi rearend. My car will have minor mods, but nothing heavy like Nos or a super charger.

That's a truck, not a sports car that they're trying to retain streetability in. You have more experience than I do, but I can't see GM putting 3.73's in a production model like the camaro or firebird. Maybe I'm wrong

What's the difference? Trucks aren't driven on the street? You could order 4.88 and 5.13 gears in 12 bolts in Camaro's. And that was before they had overdrive!

You won't find those options available on any street car and very few truck options. With the aftermarket you can put anything you want in there. Does it make sense for a street app? Not at all.

all 4th gen camaros use the same rear end, just different setups (like LSD, different gears, etc)
