  • Installed 3.42 & LSD...question

    Hi all,

As this year's project comes to a close (headers installed last week, gears/LSD today), I finally had my 3.08/open combo swapped out for 3.42/Zexel LSD. Cost a little more as the shop said I had to replace my pass. side axel and all seals/bearings, but not too bad considering how many miles were on the original parts.

Tomorrow I am taking my car to the dealer to install my PCMforLess PCM (which is programmed for the 3.42s and all my mods) and to do the CASE relearn...but today while driving the car home, I didn't notice much change. It feels a *little* quicker but not as much as I expected.

The shift points feel the same as my 3.08s...I was expecting some weird shifts but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Could it just be that I'm not feeling the gains since the PCM still thinks it has 3.08s? It does appear that my speedo is off, as expected.

    Thanks!

taking the car to the dealer to swap your pcm, wow, that dealership must love ya.

I can give you my paypal addy if you are feeling that generous with your money. :D

Swapping a PCM is like 2-4 bolts and 15 minute job. Do it yourself.

I think you may be expecting too much from just a gear swap. Going from 3.08s to 3.42s isn't going to feel like you suddenly dropped an LS1 in there. The increase in acceleration should be noticeable, but not astounding. You would probably see the difference better if you were to compare 0-60 & 1/4 mile times before and after the swap. Just an educated guess, but I would think 1/4 mile times in the six-banger would probably come down .2 to .4 sec. Some of the guys who spend a lot of time at the strip could probably give a better estimate. As far as shift points, the tranny shouldn't be shifting any differently than it was before; the only difference should be your speed will be lower at each shift point.

Yeah 15 minutes if you're drinking a beer and using one hand to do it.. lol

Seriously though, that is the biggest waste of money ever. I can understand the CASE re-learn.. but.. still.

That is the reason why I took it to the dealership, for the CASE relearn. They quoted me $30 to do the CASE relearn (some BS about having to charge at least 1/2 an hour labor) but the service tech told me there was no charge afterwards. Instead I gave the tech $20.

Anyways...after the new PCM and CASE relearn the car feels a lot better with a lot more kick. Yesterday after the rear/gear change, I only drove it on 45-limit streets and it didn't feel much different. However, after taking it on the freeway today, acceleration *is* much better. Don't know so much about traction having the torsen, but I haven't done any burnouts.

I am going to be getting 4.10's with a (haven't decided yet) stall, we'll see how the traction is.. haha
