  • broken driveshaft and need help!

Ive been experiencing a lot of vibration coming from the back of my 97 rs
so i had a friend throw it on the lift and we found out the bearing is shot in my stock 2 piece driveshaft. Since its broken I mind as well upgrade so I was going to pick up an aluminum one piece DS but 2 of the other mechanics up there said that I can't put a one piece directly underneath because it wont line up and i need another 2 piece otherwise it wont fit

This makes no sense to me but before i pick one up I wanted to see if this was true or if those 2 dont have a clue what they're talking about

Would a 2000 SS's aluminum DS fit? and does it matter if its an auto or manual?

If you've either done this or know for a fact that you can, I'd like to know so I can get back on the road:cool:

It will fit. 4th gen DS's are interchangable if I remember correctly.

Some reason GM decided to put 2 peices in our cars. :( But 1 peices in later 4th gens I heard...not positive. I have a 98.

        I have a 1 peice aluminum DS from a 2002 T/A

yes, what would make GM put a 2 piece DS in our cars, i can almost guarantee it would be more expensive for one, and they are much weaker

not to mention its just another different part between the cars to increase costs

I hope hes getting the hint. Lol

The science of it, is that a one piece is obviously stronger, and by getting aluminum, 10 lb may not seem like much, but you have to remember that you're taking 10 lbs off of the rotating weight of the driveline, 1 lb rotating weight carries ALOT of kinetic energy when you consider that it spins upward of 2500 rpm at some points. So by lowering the rotating weight you free up alot of HP and get more to the wheels.

I put a 1 piece aluminum in my '96 when the bearing went out on my 2 piece. Shop quoted about $800 for a new 2 piece. Got one from summit for right around 4 bones. Half the price and the peace of mind was worth it. No problems, smooth. I WAY prefer the 1 piece. Since the 2 piece is dead anyway, scrap it and go 1 piece. You won't regret it.
