  • Just installed new rear

I went from 3.42 open, to 3.42 torsen (off an 02 WS6 w/25k) and just finished about an hour ago. I have never done anything with the rear before, and now I did a complete rear end swap, all by myself, including drink breaks and washing hands and stuff, it took about 5 hours.

I got the entire rear end for a good price, so it was worth it. No more one tire fire!!!!!!! It's so much more fun.. now I can actually LAUNCH, and not spin for 10 seconds. I wanted to hurry up because soon I have a big custom cam and P&P heads intake etc going in, and I don't want to have ridiculous wheel spin (on one tire nonetheless).

The point of this thread though, is everything is fresh in my mind so if you have any questions, like you're going to do a rear swap soon but you aren't sure how to do it, shoot. Basically it just takes common sense. It is really easy, but is just time consuming. Also, if I didn't have a lift, a transmission jack, and an impact gun, who knows how long it would have taken.

5 Hours, huh? Not bad for a first timer ;) The last one I did took me and two buddies 52 mins, including opening up the old case to transfer the bearing cap studs and girdle cover to the new one. :burn:

We actually only timed it because we told someone (who was watching) that we'd do it in 45 mins and he didn't believe us. Almost made it. :)

Damn... you have probably all done it at least once then right? I'm guessing the efficiency really starts multiplying when you have that many people to help (that know what they're doing?).

Man what a difference though, between open and torsen. Now I actually drift to one side when I burn out and driving in the rain is so much easier

The real reason I did it though was so that I had a good base for the H/C.

it can be done on your back with just hand tools and a floor jack in about the same time if you never did it before.

          *edit*

          congrats. no more peg leg

I have a manual, but I didn't really need it. I had a couple of people in the room/shop that knew their stuff, and asked them when I got stuck.

I also had problems merging and stuff in the rain, because I had 3.42's and one wheel.. lol. Now I can actually accelerate way better in the rain. Of course now when the wheels spin the whole rear of the car fishtails instead of the one tire just spinning, but I like that too. haha

LOL I'd like to see that, I was using an impact to break loose all of the bigger bolts, and without that, there is no way to do it in less time. Like I said though that 5 hours included getting drinks and washing/cleaning. Probably spent about 4 solid hours of disassembling/reassembling.

oh f*ck off lol. i do all the work myself.

and a half inch wrachet, plus a 2 1/2 foot breaker bar will take ne thing off at first pull.

and my 5 1/2 work was, taking the exhaust off from the headers back, support plates, dropped the rear end, took down the gas tank, changed evap canister, and put it back together.

                  ne ways

come by ne time, i can show you how to work on a car!
