I am looking to upgrade my 96 firebird from an open with 3.23s to a torsen with 3.42s. I am looking at a torsen lsd with 3.42 gears for $170. However, I searched a saw that some guys on here had instead bought a whole rearend to swap in their cars. I could just buy the torsen & 3.42 from the 99+ and swap it with my open lsd and 3.23's right? or am i missing something?

Re: torsen with 3.42 or rearend?
if you're talking about swapping the entire rear axle housing completely, that can be done by an amatuer. If you're talking about buying an axle with the internals you want, taking those internals out, then putting them in your current rear, that's something to be left to a professional...not to mention, you'd have an extra axle housing, axle rods, etc, just sitting around afterwards

How much will the whole rear end cost you?
You will also need to figure in drum brakes to disc brakes conversion.
