  • Driveshaft removal troubles

I swear I have the worst luck with cars. I am in the process of removing my 2-piece drive shaft to replace it with the one piece aluminum one I bought a month ago. I get the yoke bolts out fine, I get the lower center bolt fine. I am at the last bolt and wouldn't you know the damned thing wont budge. It is above the drive shaft in the well there and there is only about 3-4 inches of space to work. I hit is with a shot of WD40 but to no avail. Please give me some advice, I dont want to have to reassemble it after having it so close to complete.

#16 is the one I am having difficulties with.

Get something better than wd40.. PB Blaster is some seriously awesome stuff, try that. Also what kind of tool are you using to get it out? Mine came out no problem, I don't remember If i ended up using an extension or something, but a breaker bar might come in handy if it's really tight. that or a short length of pipe for leverage.

i stuck a thick screw driver in between mine to get some leverage on it.

I have tried sticking something to get leverage, but with so little wiggle room I cant seems to get enough leverage.

As for the PB blaster, I'll have to pick up some for the next time.

PB blaster and a tiny wrench are your only hope

that sucks dude, i remember getting my 2 piece out the bottom bolt in the center carrier was frozen stuck so we took a sawzall and just cut that ****er off.

the top bolt was still holding it on but much to our surprise it came out like butter, iirc we used a jointed socket wrench with a swivel to get it on that bolt.

if that and pb blaster does not work then i would take a long screw driver and just pry the **** out of it. you really don't need to worry bout breaking it cuz u don't need it with the new driveshaft.

i really appreciate your nicely explained problem with pics.
however after everybody else i have no other suggestions.

so that whole triangle shapped support peice (18) is useless after the upgrade, and you can just get rid of it?

no no no no no... u dont' want to get rid of your torque arm lol.

but u can get rid of number 12, it's actually a circular brace that goes around the d.s. and holds it in place.

it holds the 2 pieces of the driveshaft together, but obviously with a one piece you just bypass it, it doesn't even get in the way because if u look the 2 piece d.s. goes UP in the middle to that point, while the 1 piece d.s. just goes straight.

The "triangle thingy"- A torque Arm, was factory on all F-Bodys, not just V6's to "hold the driveshaft together."

From what I've heard, the torque arm helps plant the rear end under heavy acceleration.
BMR even makes aftermarket Torque arms.

sorry, i did NOT mean the torque arm holds it together, i was referring to the circualar brace i was talking about.

if it sounds like i was it's cuz i had to edit the post i made.

i know what the torque arm does :wavey:

Haha I was wondering why you would be giving advice to get rid of the torque arm.

Either way, yeah, don't get rid of that.

anyone know the size of the bolt (#16) that holds the center support bearing?

                          i done lost mine. :(

im tempted to use it as an excuse to get a one piece, but a little ~$1 bolt vs a $125 drive shaft is a stretch.

You can have the ones I took out of mine if you like.

Oh, and TKO, #12 are the bolts that secure the u-joint to the yoke. I am pretty sure they are needed.
