  • LSD and 3.73Gears in stock housing

well iv been talking to a company and i wanted to know is it was to use my stock housing to install LSD and 3.73gears or should i upgrade to a bigger housing. Will i be risking anything if i use my stock housing?

noted that the bigger housing is about 3000$ installed

i just put in a stock rear that has 3.73s and a zexel lsd.

obviously the 3.73s werent factory, but you get my point.

i think up to 4.10s will fit, but there might be some issues with the 4.10s? i dont really know. im sure if you search youll find an answer.

You'll need to tune for 3.73s. Man, that seems to be a hefty gear IMO for a basically stock car. I'm runnin' that g/r in the racecar, but it sees nothing but track (or did, since the marriage). BTW what g/r are you running right now? Just curious.

Stepping up to a 3.73 you might lose some MPGs. If you already have 3.42s w/ lsd just stay with that.....

ok look, im stock 5speed. i think it has 3.23 gears and no LSD. my buddies mach1 is runnin 3.90s in his and its puttin 343rwhp and 443rwhp when hes spraying. so maybe 3.73 is too high (was thinking it was) so then should i just upgrade to 3.42 and get LSD? where can i order them? i have ABS and traction control and want to keep them. i plan on getting a tune because im getting my o2 tuned out at the same time and installing my magnaflow cat

as far as fitment goes, there's no difference from 2.73s to 4.56s; all the ring gears are physically the same size, the only difference is the number of teeth on the ring

While yes, the ring gear diameters are the same, but the width is thicker for the numerically higher gear ratios because the pinion gear is smaller. The stock size Torsen carrier does have fitment issues with 4.10 and numerically higher gears because the teeth on the ring gear stick out so far that you can't fit the "paddle" that retains the axles into the center of the carrier. You will either have to grind a bit off to fit it in there or get a "paddle kit" that I think SLP sells.

When I switched from 3.42's to 3.73's with a Torsen diff, the mechanic was complaining about how tight everything was fitting inside the housing. But it all got put in and it runs great. I took a look at it and it does look like it is a tight fit. I couldn't imagine 4.10's or 4.56's.

the width is determined by the series (2- or 3-series), and you can find any ratio in either series

I have a 97 5 speed; had open dif with 3.23s, like you. I put a LT1 rear with LSD and installed a set of 3.73s and it made a heck of a difference. Only problem is my odometer and speedometer are both 15% fast now. I cruise down the highway at about 93MPH according to my speedo, but it's really 80. As for MPG, I'm pulling 23ish city driving with full bolt-ons and untuned cam. I'd say definitely go with 3.73s over 3.42s. If you're not doing alot of highway driving, 4.10s are even an option :)

lol im always on the highway and in the city. highway 19 is long lol. im not sure what ratio im ganna go with but im sure its not much a price difference. ill be getting a tuen so i think the speedo thing wont be a problem. im ganna tune the gears and tune out the o2 while im at it. im hoping under 1500 for lsd,3.73gears,and tune. i know a tune is 400
