  • Is that read end is 2 or 3 series carrier?

I have a manual 1997 Firebird and I bought a 3.73 gear waiting to be installed.

To complete my installation, I found a complete rear end from a Automatic V8 1996 Firebird. I know that I must have a 3 series carrier to fit with my 3.73 gear. So, is this V8 rear end is 2 or 3 series carrier?

If it is a 2 series carrier, should I buy it anyway and convert it to a 3 series carrier? Is it possible to convert it?

I have planned to buy the rear end this evening so a quick response will be very appreciate, thanks!

-depends on what gearing is in the v8 rear to know what series.

-you can get ring gear spacers but I wouldn't recommend it.

I called a Chevrolet dealer and with the VIN, they tell me that it is a 2.73 so it is a 2 series carrier...

The price for the rear end with disc brakes is 350$ (Canadian dollars)... If I buy a 3 series differential later, will it fit on that rear end?

Yes, a 3 series differential will fit.

If you haven't purchased the gears yet, Strange sells 3.73 gears that fit a 2 series carrier. They make the ring gear thicker so it will fit.

don't buy that rear end if it has 2.73s. Wait and find one with some 3.42s or you will have to buy a bunch of other stuff to make it work otherwise

I have called Chevrolet with the VIN and they said that this rear end is a 3 channel (like my rear end). I already have a 3.73 gear and all I nead is a LSD because the one in that rear end is a 2 series.

What is good with that rear end is that it has disc brakes and cables. My mechanic said that it will cost less to buy that rear end than trying to upgrade my drum to disc brakes.
