  • Replaceing my 5-speed with a 6-speed

i have a 2000 camaro and it has the stock 5-speed tranny that comes with the 3.8L motor. i am gonna put a SLD in the rearend with taller gears and i would like to know if it is possible to swap the tranny out, maybe to one that would blot up to the motor with out a adapter plate or mods. any ideas?

    Re: Replaceing my 5-speed with a 6-speed

if you are trying to do it without any adapter plates then a 6 speed aint gonna help you. only thing you could do is put a 4l60e in there, but that would still take some modding. http://www.fullthrottlev6.com/forums...ad.php?t=40220
here is a link that tells you how to put a six speed in there

its not worth it you don't make enough power.

yea, it's deffinately not worth the money...for what it would cost, you could put a V8 pullout in.

ok that answers that question, now what about a rearend, i am pertty sure it has the stock gears in there, and i am probley gonna get the diff and everything out of a 98+ v8 car. how much of i diffrence would the 3.08 or 3.23 gears make over the 2.73? oh and i will not put a v8 in the car cause even tho the 3.8 will not make no where near as much power as the 5.7 would. i like the 3.8 and and everyone under estimates it!

im betting you have never been behind the wheel of a powerful v8 you will notice a difference going to the 3.23 gears, but hardly if you go with the 3.08 gears

why do you think you have 2.73 gears?

i dont recall them putting them in stock 98+ 5spd rearends

              IIRC correctly, 98+ A4's got 3.08's and 98+ M5's had either 3.08's or 3.23's...

i though i read somewhere that they had 2.73 in them, and my cousin had a 01 z-28 that make around 400whp and that thing was a blast to drive but i can't afford to put gas in somthin like that now. but what would be the easiest way to tell what gear are in there cause i am probly gonna try to keep the same gear size i can't swap trannys when i put a LSD in

jack the back end up so the tires are off of the ground

make a chalk mark on your tire, and one on the driveshaft

spin your tire 10 times and count how many times the driveshaft spins, then divide that number by 10, and you will get your gear size

assuming you have an open differential right now, you will have to times your answer by two (when i checked my camaro the driveshaft spun about 13.75 times when i spun the tire 10 times =.. 13.75/10 = 1.375 since its an open diff, 1.375x2= 2.75 which means i have 2.73 gears in it .. just a rough estimate)

and most ls1's get better gas mileage than the v6 cars, its a much powerful engine thats not loaded down by our moderately heavy cars, so it takes less to move it, and also on the highway you are only running on 4 cylinders.. plus the first to fourth shift increases gas mileage (although it is the dumbest thing ever)

thats for the gear answer, ya i know about the better gas mileage for the ls1 and i was really considerin doin a swap but i don't have to money and time to get fully involved in swaping the motor out cause its my daily driver, i am actually considerin gettin a 98-02 z-28 or SS when the new camaro's hit the market but only time and money will say for sure. but untill then i am think about playin with a remote mount turbo system from STS turbos

the ls1 cars will be worth next to nothing once the new camaros come out.. wait and save up

Or look at the RPO code in the door and save alot of energy?!?!?!?

                          all 5-speeds have 3.23s

                          all 3.4Ls auto or 5-speed have 3.23s

                          3.8L A4s had either 3.08s or 3.42s, usually 3.08s

RPO codes(in glove box or inside door edge)
                          -Gu4=3.08
                          -Gu5=3.23
                          -Gu6=3.42

ok just took a look and i have 3.23 which mean i should have a 3-series carrier. anyone now of a good place to get a LSD pertty cheap since i don't need to upgrade my carrier like i thought and what else would i need to install it in the diff case i have now? Or would it just be cheaper to get a whole rearend out of a v8?
