  • Installing Whole New Rear End.(HELP!)

I went and bought a rear end out of a z28 and it has the following:

    -Disc Brakes
    -3.23's
    -Posi

I need to know what i need to install this on my car and have the abs and disc brakes working correctly.

I had one friend say i would need a new abs controller. (Is this true?)

And will i need anything else.
and should one just unbolt and the other bolt in its same place?

as far as the ABS cont. it depends on your application. my 97 had drums in rear so its what 2 wheel?

I would say it needs to be changed beause the 4 wheel disk brakes system used a different abs mod..

the number one tip you can get.. USE PB BLAST. I have used wd-40 and had crap results, I used the PB blast, and like butter... excluding 1 bolt, thought I was going to blow a brain vien..

I didn't have to use PB blast..

But then again I had an impact. lol

If you are using regular tools... uhh.. good luck. I highly recommend you get an impact to borrow seriously. I did the whole thing, with power tools (well pretty much just an impact and extensions to get into hard to reach places) and it took about 6 hours with a 30 minute break. Of course, it was the first time for me doing it so if I were to do it again it's probably a 2-3 hour job.

As for ABS, you need to determine which ABS system you have and which ABS system the donor car had. Look for a sensor on the top of the pumpkin. If there is one there, then you have a 3 channel ABS system. If there is no sensor there then there will be a sensor at the end of each axle tube (in the brake backing plate). That would be a 4 channel ABS. They need to match (your rear end and the new rear end) if you plan on having a working ABS.

You can fairly easily turn a 3 channel rear end into a 4 channel rear by swapping the axles and backing plates. Turning a 4 channel into a 3 channel is quite a bit more difficult, but it is possible.

What's commonly referred to as the "pumpkin" is the big round(ish) chunk in the center of the rear end that holds the differential carrier and ring and pinion gears. About the size of a pumpkin ;)
