  • LSD in V6?

My rear pinion seal is leaking diff fluid so i figured while im back there I would replace the rear end since ive got the cash. Just today I came across a guy who said he has a V6 camaro that he doesnt use that has a LSD; and he would give it to me if I changed his breaks for him (im buying the pads) so im gettin a really good deal. The only thing im worried about is if it is actually a LSD rear, he said it was stock but to my knowladge there are no V6's that came from the factory with LSD. and if it is actually true how would i be able to distinguish it from the open diff on my v6 right now?

PS: I asked the guy if it spun two wheels and he said yea, so if he is tellin the truth what would the ring/pinion size be on it?

i am not sure on how to tell (other than not having a one tire fire  ) but the v6's that came with the ws6 package i believe did have an lsd, so double check with him on that or you can look at his rpo codes i believe.

look on the door panel for the RPO code y87

ring/pinion should still be for a 7.5, 10bolt rear end.

Lots of us have Y87s here, but you may need to recalibrate your speedo if you take this one with the ring and pinion because the Y87 had 3.42 gears (better launches but higher cruising revs cost you ~2mpg on the highway).

Depending on the year of your ride, you might want to transplant the entire rear end since the Y87s also came from the factory with 4 wheel disc brakes. Non-Y87s in 93-97 had drum brakes in the rear. GM switched to 4-wheel disc brakes in 98 on all V6 F-bodies.

A quick search of the site will give you all the Y87 differences. Essentially, they've got all the performance pieces of the v8 cars except the 2 extra cylinders. They are also really popular with the autocrossers because they actually have better weight distribution than the v8 because our engines are lighter.

i have 3.42s and lsd, but not y87. My door jam says gu6/g80. Im not sure if thats what your asking, but im pretty sure g80 is code for lsd on 4th gen firebirds and camaros

alright thanks you guys, he said it was the "sport package" of the camaro so im pretty sure its legit. will it still say Y87 on the door even if it is a camaro? cause i thought Y87 was only the name for the firebird v6 performance model.

y87 is the gt package (3.42 gears, lsd, v8 steering ratio, different sway bars)
It should of been available on a camaro rs and most firebird w68.
The w68 is a sport appearance package that gives a firebird a "lowered" look, with more aggressive lower body panels, basically a pontiac"ed" camaro rs.
They usually come packaged together in most cases.:)

the y87 package had no relation to the RS package or the W68 package. It wasn't a "you get one you get the other" thing...and the w68 package just ADDED ground effects.

Y87 made the cars able to run with the big boys.

w68 made the cars LOOK like they could run with the big boys. I personally like having a "sleeper."

Anyone know if there are any problems when switching from 3.23 to 3.42 rear gears and not recalibrating the speedo signal? Besides the speedo being a little off are there any other problems? I replaced mine awhile ago but did not see a need to recalibrate and the car seems to run fine.
