I recently replaced my rear with one from a 96 with 42's and LSD. I have the obd 1.5 computer so it its not exactly easy to just tune fore the gears without sending the computer out and paying around 300 for it to be done, So ive been running it without recalibrating it for about 3-4 months now without any problems also

I will be picking up a rear with 3.42's this weekend. What do I need to do to calibrate my speedo and odo so they read correctly?

              Re: LSD in V6?

Remember, fast on the drag strip and fast through the curvy back roads and autocross courses are completely different things. Our 4th gen v6s are more powerful than many 3rd gen v8s (anyone see Horsepower TV a couple of weeks ago where a '92 v8 camaro only made ~150 RWHP on the dyno) and they handle very well making them a hoot to drive.

Will we outrun a Z06 on I-40? No.

Can we hang in there on a twisty autocross course where even the baddest cars can't get over 45 without eating cones? You'd be surprised. A buddy once invited me and my puny li'l Y87 to a chevy club autocross event and ran next to corvettes and camaros of all years. No, I didn't win, but I had a solid mid-pack run. It was kinda cool when they came up and asked "Is that really a v6?"

                  Wow. Someone's touchy.

We all know that our V6s won't beat any v8s in flat out speed without A LOT of work. I was just making the point that our V6s can be very well balanced and very fun to drive cars. Remember, on a lot of road/autocross courses you have to go slower to be fast.

Did any of you see the episode of Top Gear where a lady race driver did a lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany in a ford panel truck almost as fast as one of the hosts did in a supercar (within a few seconds over 4.8 miles).

My point: Speed isn't always about raw horsepower. Good gearing and steering (as the thread originally was asking about) can make a world of difference.

Oh yeah: and a lot of the "poor drivers" I ran with were SCCA and NASA licensed road racers. They were really good about talking me through the course and I learned a lot from them that day. Don't hate. We're all friends here.

yea, ok...the Y87 option is cool if you intend to leave your car completely stock and never mod it. However, in the long run, it's nothing to get all hot and bothered over. It doesn't take much to trump your mighty Y87...and, I'm not talking about with $50k 'vettes, I'm talking about with other V6 f-bodies.

No arguement there, just as a hew hundred dollars of mods in a Z-28 or T/A will smoke a stocker as well. But, you have to admit that the Y87 package is a good starting point if your'e going to mod a v6 f-body, especially in the older cars that had rear drum brakes from the factory.

My engine's bone stock, so I know that no v8s are quaking in their boots when pull up to a stoplight. Still, I do not think I would have been able to reach 220+K miles including 2 non-stop coast-to-cost runs (DC to LA and back in less than 3 days each way @ ~30 mpg) if I'd pushed the engine too far.

The rest of the car is pretty well tweaked, though including GMPP X-drilled and slotted rotors w/Hawk performance pads, a lighter custom driveshaft, Bilstien shocks, and a bunch of other little things here and there. I also just recently added a new intake so it breaths a bit better.

I'm really not trying to be crabby or confrontational or pick a web fight. I'm just making the point that they're always a badder car out there. As long as your car does what you want it to do and you're happy with it, It's all good. We all know that we bought the 'performance lightweight" in the f-body line-up, but the point of this site is to try to tweak, massage, and optimize our cars as much as we can to meet the goals we have for our vehicles. There's no need to keep reminding folks how "slow" our cars are.

This is a technical thread; if my posts give a certain orafice on your body a sabulous quality, then send me a private message, and I promise we'll sort it out. Also, it'll take much more than your 12 year old, bolt-on car to make good on your threat, Andrew.

Now now boys, like you said this is a technical thread. No need to start measuring your manhood in public.

Also, I take no offense to someone insulting my "mighty Y87." I bought my car brand new as a college graduation present to myself. In the 12 years since, my degree's been very nice to me. I could afford to buy nearly anything I want (except maybe a new ZR1), but I choose to drive my "slow" car because it means something to me and I still think it's a hoot to drive. I have no intention of blowing it up to make a few extra RWHP. Maybe I'm just getting old. Hell, I bought my car before a lot of you kids even learned to drive.

I have had mine going on 13 years, original owner bought Dec. 95 with 18 miles on it, will never sell it , I just save money , with insurance, reg., and gas. I think the car just grows on ya after time. I just keep on modding it. If I want a new car , I'm just going to drop a LS2 in it with some long tubes, Tub. K member, nitrous will stay on and use another credit on Hptuners. Will be like having a new car with lower insurance.LOL
