  • Burnt Trans. Fluid

So I went to get my trans. fluid changed at a shop and the guy said my fluid was burnt and if he changed/flushed it that it would ruin my transmission and i'd be up sht creek. So I called a couple of trans. shops and they all told me the same thing. What should I do?

i think if you drop the pan it will be fine.. and just change that little bit and the filter
and do that a few times

it's burnt because the belt is burning up or something like that; replacing it will only make it worst since the new fluid will be alot slicker than the current fluid. Atleast, this is what I've been told

I agree with this, just change a little bit at a time.

granted new fluid is alot slicker if you do it a little at a time you should be fine just do a pan maybe a half a pan at a time and change the filter!

Thanx for the replies guys. Any other advice I should follow..

So drop the pan, fill it with new fluid, change the filter and bolt it all back up with a new gasket?

if your gonna do that, you might as well start saving for a new transmission

i would NOT change the fluid, especially in that condition

Check out these articles. They may be helpful.

The key thing is whether your transmission is actually functioning properly. Mechanics often used to scam people by telling them that their fluids (oil, tranny, diff, etc.) smelled burned when they just had normal wear. If your tranny is functioning properly, there may still be internal damage (meaning you may be driving around on a ticking timebomb), but you are really just playing a guessing game unless you are willing to do a teardown. The only way to really know the status of your fluid is to use a fluid test like this one from JC Whitney.

If the fluid tests bad, you may have to make a couple of hard decisions. However, there may be a chance things are not as bad as they were presented to you.
