I don't see where you removed the carrier bearing caps? 4 15mm bolts on either side of the carrier.

Then you should be able to use a pry bar on the drivers side and hook one of the ring gear bolt heads and get it started. Get it out enough to get the pry bar in the hole the axle goes through. Sometimes it helps to leave the drive shaft in and leave the trans in park so the ring gear doesn't rotate while your prying.

I just went through this - and mine was tight as hell too. I eventually figured out that if you stick the hooked end of a wonder bar down under the carrier you can gently pry against the top of the pinion gear. You have the turn the carrier so there is a solid part to pry against, but once you do it actually comes out (or at least mine did) will very little effort.

Don't know about just the carrier, but 2-3 years ago when I changed R&P gears in the race car (240SX) the local transmission place charged me around $200-$250 IIRC. That was with me pulling the diff and taking it to them, and I supplied all the new parts.

Did you test fit an axle before you put the carrier in the car? They have more then one axle spline count that will fit in these rears. 89 was the year the spline count changed.

Then you just need to hold the axle by the flange and lift the side that goes in the carrier moving it around. It doesn't hurt to rotate it some at the same time.
