The ABS ring press's off ( or taps) toward the ring gear. They come off more easy than they go on the next carrier. All the different units you can use take the same ABS ring, as long as they are the same series. The 2 series carrier takes a different ring than the 3 series.

I knew it kinda looked like a press fit...question is, how would I go about installing it on the new carrier? Do I got to heat it up somehow?

Ring gear bolt torque spec is 89 FT Lbs. Putting the ABS ring onto the new carrier isn't too difficult. You don't have to have it all the way on before you install the ring gear. Just tap it on until it's started, then bolt the ring gear down. The ring gear will push the ABS ring into place as you're tightening it down.

ok just got in from the final put together of the car...we meshed the gears even better then previously installed by the shop...we have them 3/4 or a little more, in contact with the pinion teeth...Put in LSD addative, enough oil...

went to drive the car...feels like it is sluggish to move...doesnt roll as fast as before when put in drive...feels like you need to give it more gas to get it going...then when you do get it going, it goes whaaaaaaaaaaaa....not high pitched, but just that, a whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa sound....

any ideas? did we set too much or not enough backlash?

We didnt touch the pinion since the new eaton unit was literally 2 thou smaller/larger (cant remember) then the original unit that broke...seemed to shim up nice...

                Any ideas?

Did you measure the back lash before you removed the old unit?

not 100% sure...I'll ask the guy who helped me out... How would that matter though, if the gear teeth aligned even better, and it didn't seem to have any play at all...heck, it was so tight we couldn't even move the d/s with our hands to rotate it...

Have you checked the backlash at all since it was put in? If it's too tight then the rear will be difficult to turn. If your backlash is in line then the only other thing I can think of is the brakes.

I did have a hard time putting the drum brake covers back on...smacked em with a hammer a few times, until I figures out that I had to knock those top hook things back into place (we depressed the brakes without the covers being on)

maybe its that...but the more I think about it, shouldn't you be able to rotate the hubs, or the d/s when it is in neutral? We couldn't do that....

Because once gears are set up and run, if removed they need to be put back the same as before they were removed or they will make noise. The difficulty to turn makes me think the backlash is way too tight.

I have a feeling it may be the gears to...since when we had no wheels on the car and just up on the stands...we ran it, and the hubs weren't turning all that fast either...

Think its possible I may of damaged anything by running it for a few minutes like this?

it didnt look like the ring gear was worn in any when we were setting it today...?

You should be able to turn the drive shaft or the axles in neutral. Did you try this before you put the drums on?

Yes, it wouldnt budge... Is there any chance it could possibly be a tranny issue? We kinda forgot that the rear brakes don't work without the covers...so a couple of times we had the car in drive to see the gears, then put it in park with the rear end still going (thinking the brakes worked and stopped it all)...is it possible I may of took out the parking pin or something like that?
