  • Ignition Control Module Went Bad Again!

Hello, I'm new here and the question I'm asking probably has been asked before, but in case it hasn't here I go...

OK, I've had to replace my ignition control modulator twice in the past year and a half the last replacement was not more than 6 weeks ago and now it has went out again. I can be driving or just idling and the engine will die unexpectedly without warning and now it has done it again...so I've come to the conclusion that something else is causing it to fry or go bad.

    What can it be?

    Any help is much appreciated....

Are you appling the heat sink compound to the module before installation?

Check some of your gauges to see if there is anything abnormal.

you use heat sink with these??

doesn't say that in the haynes...

mine and my bro's car are running just fine and i replaced the ICM's without using heat sink.

              My car is a 1998 Camaro RS 5spd with the 3.8 V6

Well I'm pretty sure it is.. I mean it's doing the same thing as before
the last two I had put in where from a auto shop and both times it was the ICM, and when I took this last ICM off myself their was some heat sink compound on it but not smeard on all 100% of it. How much do comound does it need?

Also could it be the the Crankshaft Position Sensor that's casuing it to go bad? Somebody told me that could be the issue also..

              Thanks alot guys...

I'm afraid to drive it there....it's very unpredictable as far as dying...

                          Do they rent them?

X2 , have it scanned first before throwing parts on it. I'm still on the stock ICM 167,000 miles. You could also buy a scanner for it so you can see what the car is doing.

Ok, well I'm not getting a "check engine light" or anything...so will the OBD2 scanner still pick up the code??
