my girlfriend is wanting to buy me a remote starter for an anniversary gift..
what all do i need to know going into this? will it have troubles with the stock security? do i need to get a whole new alarm system too? She wants to spend under 200 dollars...i don't want anything fancy, just a remote starter. Any recommendations?
Given the budget and the desires, I'd say yes it is possible, but not really something you can get done for you at that price point. There are remote start modules that you can use that will utilize your factory alarm system, even your factory remote, and you will also need a VATS bypass module. Neither of these things should put you over 200 bucks, but they are also not readily available at bestbuy waiting to be installed. If you want a remote start system installed, you will have to get a whole new system, including alarm, and if you want an alarm that is comparable to your factory alarm, it's going to get expensive quick. Last I checked, a remote start system that was comparable to factory security wise with minimal extra bells and whistles came out to around 550 dollars. The system I decided on ran 750 installed.
You don't really realize how much extra stuff the stock security system has until you see what the after market has to offer. "Installed" prices are very basic. Want the interior lights to come on when you unlock? extra. Want a trunk release? extra. Want all the doors and hatch to be triggers? usually extra. You'll also realize that in order to get a dual stage shock sensor, you usually have to put down a lot of cash. And then there is the handy option of having your defroster turn on when you remote start, which is also extra.
In a nutshell, it can be done the way you want with the price you want, but you'll probably have to do it yourself. Otherwise, you're looking at quite a bit more money.
there's an alarm/remote start i found..it's not bad in price but it says on that website i need to purchase a door lock module...is this a good or bad system?
how much do you think like best buy or ultimate electronics would charge?
how complicated are we talking if i tried to do i myself?
have the defroster turn on? Why not jsut turn the defroster intot he on postion at ngiht when you park your car? LOL
I just picked the system Im getting. 400 dollars installed. 3 mile range. shock sensor, unluck/lock, trunk release, remote start, also the key fob thing tells me when my car alarm is going off, if the cars unloicked/locked.
I threw one on mine last Jan. It is a MARS-24 series. Hooked right in. The only problem I have with it (if you consider it a problem) is that the alarm/remote starter fob doesn't release the trunk and it won't unlock the doors without remote start activated. If you don't use the remote start, then the OEM fob works for everything just fine, even with remote start engaged, OEM will unlock the doors. I think it ran around $179 installed.

Don't know about yours, but mine isn't a toggle switch. It's a spring loaded rocker switch that turns the defogger on for 10 minutes, so you can't 'leave it in the on position.'

Yeah, you can definitely find a system in the price range. I bought and installed a system in my sisters car that had the ability to do just about anything you want, including interior lights, lock/unlock, remote start, trunk, etc. It ran like 40 bucks shipped. However, I highly doubt best buy or any other retail store would install something for you that wasn't purchased at their store. You're also paying for quality of electronics and warranties. Mine has a lifetime warranty on everything from labor and install to all electronic parts aside from the fob itself. That was a large part of the price.
My sisters is still working after ~18 months, but is not even somewhat comparable to mine in overall quality and range.
yeah,.well from what most places are saying, this idea is apricey one to say the least..with the "passlock" feature in the security, it costs quite a bit of money to install a module to trick the pcm into thinking ur keys in the ignition..i just told the gf to buy the remaining parts for my exhaust :)

Ohhh Ok I was thinking of just the front windshield. Not the rear defogger, sorry about that. I didnt know that was an option. I hate my rear defroster. It seems like sometimes it wont work, and other times its only on for a couple minutes and I got wait antoher 10 to turn it on again.

Try checking the defroster relay in the dash fuse panel. $2 and it should be good.
