Radiator Fan Motor Failing

1993 3.4L Firebird

Since I have a manual fan switch, my car always runs nice and cool. While driving around town today I noticed the temp creeping up toward the middle of the gauge (220). I pulled into a parking lot to have a look and found that the fan was running, but very slowly. I checked the relay and fuse and they were fine. I gave the fan motor a tap with a wrench and it revved right up to full speed. It seems to be working fine now, but I will be buying a new fan motor tomorow. Luckily all of the typical parts stores have them in stock according to their websites.

Any tips for replacing it?

The book says to drop it out the bottom, but I cannot do that. I need to take it out the top, I can't see why it wont come out the top???

Even though I am talking to myself here I will post an update anyway.

Changed the motor yesterday, piece of cake.

If anyone ever needs more info just ask.

They have higher flowing fans that are pretty cheap in price and instead of stock dual fans flowing 3000cfm or less you can upgrade to like 3500-4000cfm flowing through, just have to rewire them which is easy.

Actually the 3.4L only has a single fan. The 3.8L had the dual fans.

nascar, i wonder if there is any kind of "upgrade" for our single radiator fans.

I think it works pretty well as it is. With my 160 t-stat the car is running right at 160 with the new fan motor. Using my manual fan switch I run the fan all of the time.

Pretty much and aftermarket electric fan could be used, but I think all mine needed was a new motor.

When I removed the old motor the shaft was difficult to spin by hand, that is how worn out it was.

When I spun the new motor shaft by hand it made several revolutions before it stopped. The old motor was totally worn out.

No problem , look like you needed some posts for your thread. It would be good to swap to a dual fan would run even cooler. Now its around 60 degrees here at night I can leave my fans off with my manual switch and it only heats up to 165-170 dgrees on a 45 mile drive, but I do have a bigger ALM. radiator.

No problem , look like you needed some posts for your thread. It would be good to swap to a dual fan would run even cooler. I wish my turbo was in and up and running, would be perfect for it, turn the boost up to 15 PSI and hunt down some new 2010 SS's and some Vettes (minus ZR1's) LOL

you guys know how i've switched my 3.4 pcm over to Obd-1???

i've programmed the computer to have my rad. fan come on at 194* and off at 181* for my 180* thermostat.

I don't even need to use my manual fan switch, the fans do it all by themselves :P

same, i have mine programmed to come at early, but the fan switchs are nice for when your at the track and letting your car cool down

Hp tuners can do that for ya ;)

I am getting a manual switch for them though...I already have mine made up..its going to compliment my electric water pump that is sitting in new jersey right now...
