  • Vats going out or other problems?

I have two problems which may or may not be related. First off, lately, and this doesn't ALWAYS happen but its becoming more progressive... When I insert my key and turn the ignition, absolutely nothing happens. No crank, no ignition, the gauges light up but thats it... then I turn the key back and try it again and it gives a kind of weak crank, doesn't take long to start, just feels weaker than a normal crank. Now other times I can put my key in, turn it and it cranks up just fine...

The second problem I'm having, and this only lasts for up to 15 minutes after a cold start, when I turn my steering wheel to the left, I hear a squeeling sound coming from what sounds to be INSIDE the cabin, sounds more like it's in the steering wheel than it does inside the engine compartment... this also just began a few weeks ago... I'm having my motor swapped for a 5.3L in a few weeks so Im going to have these problems fixxed along with it... but what am I looking into?

Is my starter bad or is VATS going out and can VATS be causing this sound in my steering wheel?

    Thanks.

Edit: Btw, the obvious stuff has already been checked, no loose connections on the battery or starter, and the battery is at full charge... IN FACT I recall having the EXACT same problem with my Z28 but it turned out to be corroded cables, which isn't the case this go round.

It does not sound like a VATS problem to me. If it was a VATS problem, your security light would come on and the car would not start for the next 3 minutes.

    Bad connection somewhere...

X2, no lights would come on just the security, maybe look into the BCM , if not the starter/batt. or bad connection.

Are you sure about the car not starting for the next 3 minutes?
I just tried to crank my car twice this morning... Both times it didn't even TRY to crank. I still have the chimes and what not the car is supposed to make but upon turning the key... nothing... I took the key out and reinserted it and then it cranks over like thing was ever wrong...what the heck is wrong?
