when i turn the key, the solenoid on the starter clicks but does not engage the starter motor. i've changed the starter, the ignition switch and the battery. any guesses? i also changed the fusable link thinking it might be faulty. im stumped and getting to the point of parting it out. (over reaction) any help will be appreciated

        Defective new starter?

Bad positive battery cable leading to starter?

Bad negative battery cable leading to ground?

Did you test for power at the starter with a helper trying to start the car?

When did this problem start? Does the engine turn over by hand?

Need some history here to help you further...

          Re: ignition problem

took new and old starter to autozone and had them tested, both are good.

both positive and ground battery cables were wire brushed to remove any corrosion.

solenoid is getting the required voltage when the key is turned. fluke volt meter used to test.

car will push start, engine is not seized.

            Re: ignition problem

Sure sounds like a battery cable issue to me. You might have a break somewhere in the middle of the cable. The issue may not be at the terminal ends.

With a helper for safety, can you jump the starter with a screwdriver (or remote start switch) and get it to start or does it still just click?

You said you are getting the required voltage at the starter, but maybe you are not getting enough amps? Typically the starter clicks because it is receiving power but not enough to crank the engine.

            I have a few suggestions:
            1. Jump start it with another vehicle and see if it still just clicks.
If still no start then remove jumper cables and try the following:
            2. With a helper, turn key to "run". Have helper hold the brakes while you jump out the starter with a remote start switch or a screwdriver.
If the starter will not crank the engine when you jump it out as stated above then I will say that you have a cable issue.

              Re: ignition problem

I tried to jump it with my cherokee, and the ignition switch caught fire. lol thats initially why i changed the ignition switch. I just bought a battery box to relocate the battery to the trunk. i will run all the brand new cable and see if that fixes it. It'll be about a week before i do that though. I'll let you know what happens from there, thanks for all the help though.
