So my car is making the whining noise and I'm pretty sure it's my bearings. So my question is how long can I drive like this ? What are other potential problems could occur. I plan on getting a rebuilt one but i'm broke ATM because of the holidays.

Also how do I take my alternator off ?

    Thx in advance yall:)

    Re: alternator bearings

my car has whined since i bought it... 4 years ago

let me give you some advise, go out and buy a new alternator, my friend got his rebuilt, and it was $20 cheaper than just buying a new one, and it has no warranty on it.

i have never removed an alternator from these cars, but my guess would be take the belt off, undo the connector, and it should come off with ~2 bolts

you can get one at napa for $134 with a $60 core charge

but if you are set on getting it rebuilt, i would find another shop, $100 to get the bearings replaced is a huge ripoff.

Disconnect battery. Take belt off alternator pulley. Remove 3 bolts that hold it on. Disconnect plug and wire from alternator. 5 minute job. ;)

Speaking of alternators...has anyone ever used a Denso reman. alternator? The part number is 210-5118

Also, there's a company which sells rebuild parts for the CS130D www.alternatorparts.com

So, there must be a way to rebuild those units in the field even though GM claims you can't.

Anyone know where to buy a socket which fits the funky little bolts that hold CS130Ds?

ok so I was at a light and I looked at my battery gauge and the needle was fluctuating back and forth between 13 and a little past thirteen. ATM I had my heater and amp on . My amp is 200 watts. Is this normal ? And how many watts can a factory alternator handle with out running into problems ?

When I had my alt rebuilt; which is for sale btw, the guy at the shop plugged away at the calculator for a sec, and told me that surprisingly in stock form I had enough alternator to run my 600 watt rms amp. I believe the stock units are rated at 105 amps, but I could be wrong. I had it built to produce 140 amps.

i run an amp, im not sure what wattage it is, but my needle moves a tiny bit also, its hard to see, but when you get close you can see it moving back and fourth

im not really sure, but i would buy one with a lifetime warranty, they really seem hit or miss, someone might buy one and have it last forever, but another person will have to get the alternator replaced 3-4 times
