  • VATS or Ignition Switch Problems.

Okay, I've posted about this a few months back. What was happening is, on rare occasions, I would insert my key to crank the car, turn the key and absolutely nothing would happen. Everything else still had full power. Windows, Doorlocks, Gauges, Radio, Lights, everything still worked fine so I know its not the battery. I would turn the key back to the off position and try again and it would give a 1 second DELAYED crank. As in it took a second before it TRIED to crank, meaning during that second nothing happened, it wasnt even trying to crank. Then other times I could put the key in there and turn it and it would crank right up without any problems at all.

Well, eventually it got to the point where the security light would illuminate and stay on for a long period of time on a few occasions, the car actually cranked right up though without any problems.

I took it to a mechanic and they told me I most likely had a bad key and they replaced it for me. The new key had been working great until Yesterday when I went to crank it and the security light came on. The car still cranked just fine... But I have to know whats going on here...

Am I looking at replacing the ignition switch? As in THIS PART http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1988-...Q5fAccessories ... or THIS part http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/AC-De...Q5fAccessories ???? Which part most likely needs to be replaced?

I know btw the second Ebay link is for a Manual transmission, this is just for reference only.

Just bypass it. Its the VATS system not recognizing the resistance in the key resistor. Its probably the ignition switch. There is a thread around here somewhere......lemme get back to you with the instructions on how to do the bypass.

did you fix your problem? its either the passkey or the ignition switch. sounds like an issue i just dealt with and it turned out to be the switch.

I bypassed the entire system and my car has been perfect ever since. Search on here for my thread.

No, I have not had this fixed, it is a VERY spuratic and rare problem. I haven't had any problems except that one ever since I have been using the new key.

I already knew it was most likely the ignition switch but my question is which part is the ignition switch? the first or second Ebay listing???

Where is the passkey module on the camaro? Been looking for it and havent found it yet.

I did the relay bypass a while back but still having trouble starting sometimes. I bought a bypass kit from ebay. I cant find where the TDM is. Looked all under the dash.

On my Firebird it was behind the radio and all the way above. Remove the radio, and look up towards the right. There it is...
