  • cig lighter socket/ horn

so ever since i bought the car i've had an issue with the fuse for my cig lighter/horn. If i put one in (25 amp) it will blow either right away or in a couple of minutes. This means that i haven't been able to use my cig lighter OR horn. Now...

I would like to be able to use both. The horn for obvious reasons and the cig lighter because it would power my scanner and other things as well. But if i could even get one of them working that would be great too. I figured there was probably a short somewhere in the wiring of either the horn or the cig lighter but i'm no electrician and i wouldn't know where to start so for almost four years now i've gone without the use of either of them.

Just out of curiousity the other day i disconnected the wiring clip going to the back of the cigarette lighter. I was hoping that if the cig lighter socket itself was shorting out than maybe this would fix the problem. I installed a fresh fuse and now my horn works just fine without the fuse blowing (at least not yet)

could this mean that it was the socket all along? There's nothing stuck down there as far as i can tell and if it was the problem than i'm glad my horn is working now but i'd like to still get the cig lighter working.

How do you replace the cig lighter socket on our cars? I went to advance auto but they have generic ones that don't have a spot for the wiring clip that just attaches to the back of it. How do i get the thing out? it seems like it's just stuck in there with no way of removing it.

Anyone know where to get a new cig lighter socket and how to replace it?

I had the exact same problem. Yes is is the cigarette lighter. The best place to find one is the dealer. They really arent that expensive, you can try autozone, advance, napa, ect. They should all have them too. Replacing it is retarted easy.

I believe the back of the lighter housing unscrews, then the inner section is pulled out the front. Pretty much the same as the generic replacement you have, or go to the dealer and get the exact same part, it will be super obvious how it goes together.

wow.. you guys give me some real hope and make me wish i had done this years ago.

now that i think about it ... the bottom probably does just unscrew from the top and then is replaced vice versa.

        cool beans!
