  • HID Lights

    Hello everyone.
So I have decided it's time for some HID lights since I've had to put two sets on my car this year already, and the only ones I can find in my area are cheap GE lights from walmart that only last a couple months. and that's not the worst, they're $25 a pop so I've already spent $200 on my stupid lights this year .

Anyway, to the point. I've done some research on the headlight conversions that people have done for the 93-97 camaro but I was hoping to use my halogen housings for some HID's. I understand the whole thing about projectors and how they are better, but I really dont want to go that far in depth with an install to take out the headlight mounts, and drill into my bumper (which is getting replaced) and make something that is not reversible. So unfortunately even the smallest projectors I can find are too big for me to drill out my housing and use that as a lens. which leaves me with just buying bulbs and ballasts and putting them in my housing. I have found a few sellers on ebay that have them for around $37-$40 which is a good price, but I'm just wondering how good of a bulb and ballast set up this really is, and if it's just going to be another waste of 50 bucks for me. I'm confident that there's others out there that have done the same thing I want to do, so I'm looking for some advice on brand, kelvin color, and where to buy.
    Thanks in advance!! :D

    Re: HID Lights

4300k is peak light output and is similar in color to Silvania Silverstars. Anything above or below that has less light output, and the farther in either direction you get, the less and less effective it is.

My suggestion is to buy Hella FF75s and replace your stock housings with them. It's a simple install, is reversible (other than having a hole in the header panel for the one bolt they use) and is a big upgrade. I've also had many compliments on the headlights, they really seem to update the front end. The bulbs these come with are excellent, and if you want a bit more light or a different color, I use the Silverstar Ultras. You'll notice this is not HID still, and these lights are still not suited for HID use, so don't expect to do both.

If you are truly set on putting HIDs in your stock housings, at least cap your bulbs. I've heard of this being done with simple aluminum foil as well as companies that will professionally cap your HID bulbs. Who knows, they might sell them this way by now, why don't you check that out.

The HID kit I am using in my projectors ran me about $120, but this was back when the least expensive was still around $70. With the engine off, the lights flicker after being on a few seconds and always have, however I've never had any problems with them in normal use. For this reason I'd say you get what you pay for, however, the technology has gotten better since I was in the market and the prices have come down, so chances are you won't have to spend well over 100 bucks to get something of high quality anymore.

Yea I have the 55w 8000k cause they said the 8000k in the 55w was the 6000k in 35w if that makes any sense. I didn't want a blueish color.
