Have 2000 Camaro and last week the security light came on for no reason and stays on now. Anyone have any ideas?

Yeah, the VATS has gone into failure mode. Likely it's not reading your key properly any more. There are two wires in the ignition switch that read the key which are the common cause of the failure. They flex everytime you turn the key and eventually break. You can tear the column apart and fix it or bypass the sucker. BTW, if your battery dies or you disconnect it, you're screwed. The system will no longer work in failure mode and it will assume somebody is trying to seal your car. Won't move until you fix it.

I understand perfectly. If that light is on the VATS has failed, period. You are just one of the fortunate few and the VATS failed while the car was running. It then goes into failure mode. If the BCM looses power it will no longer be in failure mode and you're done. Here's some reading on the subject.
