Finally got the car fired up today, had to boost it because the battery was fully dead (brand new optima redtop, few months old)

anyways, I boost it with the beater but I only left the cables on maybe 20-30 seconds max...take the cables off and let the car run...lights flicker a bit so I get in the car and I see my battery gauge reading 13-14volts, then dropping down way into the red like 3-4 volts kinda thing, then up then down, up, down up down etc etc...maybe in like a 3-4 second interval.

I only had the car running maybe 2-3 minutes...I had to leave so I shut it down...is this just happening because the battery is dead? or is this an electrical issue?

I tried to restart the car as soon as I shut it down and the battery was way to low in the red to even crank the motor.

    Re: weird issue

If the battery is only three months old, I would go exchange it. I've heard normal battery chargers are hard on Optima batteries. I dont know if its true or not, but supposedly a trickle charger is the way to go.

I haven't had a charger on it...I just hooked the neon up with jumpers to crank it over...as soon as I hook the cables up my battery gauge goes full, took the cablws off and it was surging up and down...but I'm wondering if that's normal
