  • security light

I was driving home the other day and my security light came on and stayed on while already driving. Read the owners manual, but it doesn't give a reason for why its comes on like that. The key isn't wet or anything, so I'm assuming something faulty with the security chip or the pcm?? Not really worried cause the car starts, but i'd like to get rid of the dash light.

    Don't disconnect your battery.

Well what do I do when I go to store it for the winter and want to disconnect the battery?

        Re: security light

You'll have to fix whatever broke in the VATS system. A constant steady means the system has failed, but you can still operate your car until you disconnect the battery. Soon as you do that, it'll lock you out until you either delete/bypass the system or repair it. I'm pretty sure it can be disable through tuning software (PCMForLess.com claims they can) but I haven't done it myself. There is a way to bypass it using a resistor, I'm sure someone has done the write-up on this site. The problem from what I hear is likely a broken wire in the steering column.

I have the same problem. Seems to have come on for no reason and stays on. If I get time this weekend I'll dig into my column. Haven't had a reason to open that up yet so this is new grounds for me.

Yea I don't really have any knowledge in that department so I'm not quite sure what I'll do yet

              *update

took my car to a chevy dealership... had them run a diagnostic scan and it appears my BCM is throwing some codes. The tech said i need a replacement BCM to fix my problems

Don't forget new keys, and remote entry things... I'm sure they won't include those.

Can't they just reprogram it? She only told me i'd need the bcm, nothing about new keys or anything.

Just bypass the system with a resistor. Its not as if the system is THAT much of a theft deterrent anyway.....

I don't think keys can be. The remote might be.

i tried both my keys so the resistor wasn't the problem

well she didn't mention anything about it.. so if you're correct, i hope it's already included in that price

Its fairly unlikely that the key is the problem, more or less the contacts in the ignition switch. Not that the BCM could be the problem, but I would bypass the resistor in the key, which would also bypass a bad contact in the ignition switch....
