Re: rpm dips and voltage drops

the alt does have a regulator on it...it's that piece with the thin wire (brown or grey I think it is) that plugs into the top of it...

Now, food for thought...if it was vacuum related how come it happens when I am slowing down from speed to a stop (using vacuum), BUT doesn't happen if I am idling fine sitting at a light and begin pumping the brakes? Does pumping the brakes at a stop not use vacuum?...should use the same amount of vacuum no?

Re: rpm dips and voltage drops

I'm going to bump this issue, because I seem to be getting worse. It's to the point that I seem to have to drive with two feet now or the car really does not like stopping.

Actually, sometimes while driving down the street, if I just lift off the gas the voltage will sometimes dip just coasting.

I just installed a brand new alternator to.

no, oddly enough Ive had a hard time searching that one to find out exactly what it is and how exactly to do it.

I got it Rob, appreciate it.

I don't fully understand what's going on though?

So I remove the 8ga wire going from the battery to the alternator and don't replace it?
Instead, put a new 4GA wire going from the ALT to the red junction box that sits beside the battery?

What are the other two modifications? I am assuming the 4GA from the -Battery to the Block? and 4GA from the battery to the starter? (but why change the power wire to the starter? that wire is used just once for like seconds?)

                  That's it.

Dotted lines are changes, solid lines are existing/unchanged.

Red - hot, black - ground.

That's all I did - I see no need to upgrade anything else at this time.

If you look at the electrical path - why would you choke the flow with a 8GA to the battery and then increase to a 6GA to get power to the circuits once the alternator is providing power? Now the alternator provides power directly to the cicuits and "back flows" to charge the battery.

hmm, that means there is only the removal of the one power wire, and relocation of it?

I thought the mod was the big 3? so there was supposed to be 3 changes? If all the solid lines are existing and unchanged than the ground wire is fine?

Well, maybe I should address this at this time to...Is there a particular spot the ground wire should be on the engine block? When I replaced my motor I forget where the spot was and kinda just randomly stuck it on the side of the block. Is there maybe a better location?

It is bare metal to bare metal - not painted - right?

kinda maybe? I'll investigate it better tommorrow when I am off and have a chance to look at it and start cleaning up this mess of wires that has accumulated in this car.

Thread zombify. LETZRIDE did you ever find a solution to this problem? Did the alt wire to junction box fix your problem or was it a bad ground? I did the alt rewire, replaced the alt with anew, and I added an extra ground to body and that only pacified the problem. The rpms would still surge 500-750 when I decelerated every once in a while but the voltage stayed steady. Tonight the whole problem came back in full effect with rpms and volts dropping at every stop even just letting off the accel on the highway. No one really gave a true fix(They did help out though for some time).Vacuum or PCM or weather? It snowed yesterday but thats the only day dallas has been under 20 degrees. Im lost

Mine isn't at all weather related... its 15° and snowy here, no issues. But damn, if it only changes 150rpm, lucky you... mine surges 400-1200.
