alternator going?

no problems yesterday, and nothing has been changed recently. today i'm driving to school and i notice my volt meter is around 10-11, when it's usually always around 16. i turned off the radio, defroster, and heat and the meter didn't move. also the headlights and interior gauge lights were dim. plus i can hear the whine sound which i couldn't hear before.
so i'm pretty sure it's the stock alt. that needs to be replaced.
any places i can get them online? i want one that has a higher amp @ idle compared to the stock. thanks

Its your alternator. Does your check gauges light come on too?

no lights as of yet. by the way i know the stock alt. is 105 amp, but what is it at idle?

how hard is the install? the hi-po alt. can i just buy 4g wire at a local store and run it to the battery, because the place where the alt. is from they want $25 for it.
also, do i just need to run this wire from the alt. to the little red battery box thing? or do i need to replace the one that goes to the battery from this box as well?
