• Some Questions

Ok i have a 94 camaro hatchback with 4, 6 3/4" Sony XS-F1721 speakers and a Sony CDX-L550X headunit. I am looking at putting some subs in my car, i have absolutely no knowledge of putting subs in cars.

I want to know if its possible to make your own custom box? because i see that most custom boxes are like $150+ and i was wondering if i could make my own. Also what kind of box is the best? like stealth, millhouse, or the tilted up one.. (dont know the name)

Secondly what subs and amps would be good? i really would like to stay under $200 if at all possible, i was thinking a single 12" or dual 10" (is that a good choice?) Ive heard that Kenwood amps are good, but what kind of one would i need? like 600 watts?

also is there anything else i should know or consider when doing this?

Also i only listen to Heavy Metal if that matters, i do not listen to any rap.

Heavy Metal Box sounds best when sealed. Sealed boxes arent as loud, but hit cleaner, and you will be able to hear that double-bass clearer. As far as box making, pick your sub first (i like rockford subs). A 10" would probably be your best bet since they hit tighter, but wont go as loud. The key is tightness for rock subs.

Once you have a sub picked, look at the mfg. reccomended specs on the volume of the box it should be put in. Get the volume for a sealed box, and make it out of MDF (medium density fiberboard). Seal the edges of the box with caulk and make sure you have the attachment for the speaker wire installed. Put some carpet on it, glue it down, and install the sub. You may want to put some stuffing into the box also.

Finally, get an amp that is matched to the RMS power of a sub. If the sub is rated like 500w., it may be only 200 RMS watts. get an amp that puts out 200W rms, hook it up, and you are on your way!

      thx for the quick reply!

im wondering where a good place to buy subs are? would online be better or should i look at like best buy?

im thinking dual 10" now? or would just one 10" be enough?

oh yeah exactly what style of box is the best for this? also ive heard that subs can take a lot of power and drain your battery or something? is this true?

If you are just doing metal, one 10 set up right will be fine. Many people set up multi-sub systems with enclosures that are wrong, wrong box type, etc. If you have the proper sub in the proper box with the proper stuff running it, its gonna sound great. Two 10" is going to push you over your $200 limit (as it is now, $200 is very little to be spending on a total setup, unless you buy used.)

IMO, if you have 1 10" sub, amped properly, in the right box, and you put it in the trunk (facing the glass works great), you will have a great sounding system for metal.

As far as power draining, it depends on the wattage of the amp you go with. If you have a slight dimming of the lights when the subs hit, get a .5 fared capicitor or something like that. It will help with the power drain.

            Any other questions, just ask.

With a 200 dollar limit you wont get anything powerful enough to drain from the charging system enough to need a cap...is the 200 bux for just sub or sub and amp or the whole system? shed some light...

If you just listen to metal then I would highly recommend getting a 10" stealthbox. You can get an MTX Thunderform loaded with a 10" sub for around $170 on ebay. Pair that up with a good 300-500 watt amp and it will sound great.

I'm gonna agree with pretty much everyone here. I'd go with a single 10". See if you can pick up a used stealth box cheap, then buy a new sub/amp. I recommend a Rockford Punch 301S running in bridged mode to an Alpine SWS-1041. You should be able to find the Alpine for about $65 brand new, but remember to get the 1041 model and NOT the 1041D model. With that Rockford amp, you will need either a 4 ohm SVC or a 2 ohm DVC. The 1041 is 4 ohm SVC. That setup should be unbeatable for that price range.
