JBL1200.1 + Planet Audio= new alt?

Right now the only amp i have is a Planet audio which draws 60 amps at full blast.

I am soon going to get a JBL 1200.1 which will draw 120 amps at full blast.

So thats going to equal 180 amps just for the amps. I still have other things like neons,power converter etc...

I am concerned that i might need a high output alt in the near future. How much power can the stock alt handle?

Will it be safe to run both of those amps for like 6 months or so while i get a high output alt?

If i do need one i think i will want to stay away from buying it online. id rather buy it at a store, that way if it goes out i can quickly go and get an exhange.

i wouldnt use the neons, and forget about using the PS2/Screens unntill you get a HO alt...i have BAD dimming with the volume moderately cranked, and i even upgraded the stock amp/battery wiring...and i only have a JBL80.4 and the 1200.1, no other accessories

The JBL pulls 112amps max. Just a note. ;)

Yes, you are going to have bad dimming problems without a doubt. I have two amps. One draws 60amps max and the other draws 90amps max. I had horrible dimming problems. Couldn't even drive the car at night if I wanted to. I installed two 1 farad caps for the time being and that cured the dimming problems.

Well, I ran into some other things I had to pay for.... so the caps ended up staying on for like 2 years. Not one problem the whole time. Now I have a H/O alternator from Irragi Alternator. Couldn't be happier. [img]smile.gif[/img]

Oh, and the neons are no big deal. They pull very little amperage. Not sure about a power inverter, but it can't be much compared to an amp.

neons are like not even .5 amp a peice I Think, and with a cap u'll be fine, but its all in the wiring. Ive ran my Crunch 1000watt amp a full set of neons forever and no dimming. ****, I even ran 800watts AC threw a DC ac converter to run my Xbox and a full Projector and it didnt even dim it. People have a big misconception about the ability to create power, I did all that without a cap. Just get proper wiring.

But if you think about it..... how many things can you plug into a wall socket at your house? Quite a few, huh? Now go to your circuit breaker box and check out the size of that breaker. Not very big huh? And chances are that one breaker powers several wall sockets. So how many things can you plug into several sockets?

I'm just saying I don't think that converter pull enough to really even worry about. Not when we're talking 100amps per amplifier.... what was the fuse rating of your Crunch amp? And do you know what a cap REALLY does? Seems you are the one with the big misconception....

The power converter has (2) 20 amp fuses built into it.

And i know for sure i am not going to waste $$$ on a cap. All a cap does it puts a band aid on the problem, the problem is still there just not visible.

Besided a cap just puts more strain on the alt b/c its one more item it has to power up.

The JBL pulls over 100 amps? I have the JBL 1200.1, and it only has 3 20 amp fuses (60 amps)- how can it draw over 60 amps without blowing it's fuses?

I've popped a couple of 60 amp fuses when the amplifier is turned up past half power- can it do more than 60?

if im not mistaken it should have (3) 40 amp fuses.

Think about it in terms of power, not amperage.

Sure, our household breakers are 20 amps. But get this, that's at 120 volts. Your wattage is the amps times the volts!! so we're talking 2400 watts from that one circuit.

Now, the reason your amplifier is such high-amperage is because the car voltage is 12 volts. Multiply your 12 volts by 100 amps and you only get 1200 watts. Still less than household with 5 times the amperage.

Ok...... I realize that..... what is your point? We were talking about a power inverter. Which outputs 120V 60Hz.

I was just trying to show him how much stuff you can actually plug into a socket. It was an attempt to show that your run of the mill household good doesn't draw much juice. Yes, the breaker size is small and yes, I realize that is at 120V, but that is really irrelevant in this case.

It sounds like he is running a PS2 off a power inverter..... which outputs 120V 60Hz.... just like in a house. I said I wasn't 100% sure exactly how much current an inverter can pull.... and two 20amp fuses was a little bigger then I expected but still pretty small compared to the 100amp draw of an amp. I bet it draws maybe 10amps with just the PS2 plugged in. Maybe..... but I doubt it.

The PS2 will say on the bottom how much current it draws. Multiply that current by 10 to get how much current it would draw at 12v (bear with me)

Anyway, add 1 or so amps to that value to get the approximate draw of the inverter w// PS2

WHAT??!!?!? Add 1 amp to the current draw of the PS2? Or add 1 amp to the number you would get if you multiply by 10??? What are you getting at?
