hi,
i am looking to get 2 12 inch subs and have heard some good things about the kicker 12 inch square subs...anyone out there have them? ill probally go with a v12 Alpine amp and the subthump box to fit them in. Also what is an ohm? IS Dual 4-ohm Voice Coil Woofer better or Dual 2-ohm Voice Coil Woofer better?
thanks eddie
2002 Pewter a4 Camaro
No Mods as of yet, but this Spring:
Wisper Lid
Borla Catback
Holly Power Shot air Filter
Tranns-go shift Kit
Alum. or Carbon Fiber drive shaft
And may be in the future an LS6
I can't give you reviews on the subs because I frankly don't know, but an Ohm is a unit of measure in electronics that measures resistance & impedence.
The lower the resistance, the more current can flow through the load at the same voltage. According to what I remember of Ohms law, V=I*R (V=Voltage in volts, I=Current in amps, R=Resistance in ohms), simple algebra makes I=V/R out of the same equation. V stays constant, R gets smaller, I gets larger liniarly.
Now V*I=P (V=Voltage, I=Current, P=Power) so if voltage is constant, and current doubles, power also doubles. Likewise, if voltage remains constant, current halves, so does the power.
Enough Electronics 101.... a 2 ohm sub on the same amp as a 4 ohm sub will output twice the power, ASSUMING the amp is 2 ohm stable
Now, how does this apply to you? A dual 4 ohm VC sub can be wired in parallel to produce a single 2 ohm load amp, or in series to produce a single 8 ohm load to the amp (meaning, the amp "sees" a 2 ohm speaker, or an 8 ohm speaker). A dual 2 ohm VC sub can be wired in parallel to prudce a 1 ohm load, or in series to produce a single 4 ohm load. If you get the dual 4 ohm one, make sure your amp is 2 ohm stable.. if not, do NOT get it, and get the dual 2 ohm one and wire it in series to get a 4 ohm load for your amp. I highly recommend NOT running a 1 ohm load to your amp becuase most amps are not 1 ohm stable.
So, in conclusion, if your amp is 2 ohm stable, go with the dual 4 ohm VC sub and wire it in parallel to have a 2 ohm load..... and if it's not 2 ohm stable, go with the dual 2 ohm VC sub in series and have a 4 ohm load
I have a pair of the 10" L7, but I have made a half dozen boxes for the 12s and OMG, they hammer. Some people don't think that they sound good, but they sound pretty darn good to me. I got mine just because I thought they were cool as hell and hardly nobody has them. I didn't want to be like everybody else with a JL12. I got the dual 4ohm coils and you should do the same. I'm running mine on a RF 800.2 and they get plenty loud for me. I know the 12s are even louder. I got a box style that fits perrrrrfectly for the 12s.
I have 2 for sale if you want them. Make me an offer. 1 is brand new in the box, and the other is slightly used a month, still with original box and warrentee. I have a box for them to fit a 3rd gen camaro, but ended up selling my third gens and bought my fourth gen convt so now have no need for them. The one is brand new never hooked up. I paid $250 each for them plus shipping. Let me know.
