$750...is what I spent on mine. No one has messed with my car. It's the Python (a DEI company along with Viper) Remote Start/Alarm system along with a DEI proximity sensor and a vared LED scanner. You do get what you pay for. I park in some pretty bad areas, with my t-tops off mind you. Any hands reach in, bam - alarm goes off.

I would NOT skimp out on an alarm. Check with your insurance company, most likely the alarm will be in fact "free" after a year because they will lower your rate.

I have a Viper and payed about $350 for mine with auto door locks installed. Then again, I have the hook-up with car electronics :D

I got a Viper 800ESP off ebay for $140. I installed it myself and added a proximity and glass break sensor.

I have a Viper as well. Love it... not had any problems with it, and more importantly no one has messed with my car. Freshman year (college) my entire stereo got ripped out. Insurance paid for most of it but still a pain in the azz. 3 years later and no probs. The power door locks are definately a plus as well. :D
Paid b/t $300-400 don't remember exactly.
