Don't do it. Unless those are cheap subs. Underpowering subs cause quicker distortion, and quicker deaths to subs. You could tap into the rear speakers in the trunk area though...

I had mine done at circuit city but you can do it yourself. What you will need is a speaker line to RCA converter. What it does, is essentially taps into the factory speaker lines and converts them to rca output while still being able to use the speakers that the lines were originally hooked to.

Several manufacturers make an amp that can handle amplified input. Mine does, it's a Kenwood. You just have to keep the gain turned down real low. It also filters out high frequencies so I don't need a preamp. With that Bose HU in there, the whole thing sounds awesome!

So, are you trying to wire subs to the HU, or add an amp to the factory HU?

And yes, underpowering subs CAN destroy them. Do some research on distortion. A lot of people misunderstand powering a sub, and believe overpowering them destroys them. Not really... it's underpowering them. This causes distortion, and you can't really hear your sub when it starts to distort, because the trunk hatch is closed... open it up, and you'll hear it distorting when it's loud.

And wire gauge and quality... this is a must... you have a 500 watt amp, and THINK the subs are getting all of that watts... but you use crappy Radioshack 10 gauge wires for your power wire. That's good, the amp turns on, but can it get close to producing 500 watts? Not close. These things need to be considered.

massivefirebird: Under powering subs will not hurt the subs at all. Its when people turn the gains up too much which clips the signal that ruins the subs. People with a weak amp try to compansate by turning the gains all the way up which makes square soundwaves causing the sub to distort. So no, less power (watts) will not hurt a sub. Just make sure the signal is clean and not clipped.
