  • MTX sub box volume?

Ok whoever had this 99 camaro before me installed a mtx box/sub combo. It's the one that tucks into the little space (sorry forget what it's called) on the driver's side of the trunk. Oh, and it's the unpowered version.

Anywho, I don't like the sound of it too much; I never liket mtx stuff.. Sure a lot of boom for the buck but it's also just a lot of boom...

The box seems pretty convenient though, yeah shape is kinda weird but I cant use the rest of the trunk space for a better box.
So I want to keep the box but get a better sub, does anyone know what volume that particular box is so that I can pick a matching element?

I could just pull it all apart and measure it with water but I'm lazy so I was going to check if someone here already knew.. ;)

I'm sure someone else will chime in here, but you can go to mtx's website and get that spec. As I recall, the box is on the small side so you'd need a sub with a very low sealed volume spec. Hope that helps.

Shhesh why in the world didn't I think of that...
.6 cft, it was right there!

Yea that's kinda small, infinitys are out but one of the polk 10'' should do well...

I have a MTX Thunderform, and personally I think it's great for what it is. However, JL Audio makes a better version of this setup that has a bigger volume, better construction, and comes with a JL W3 sub that will provide just as much boom, but sound better in the process. Just a suggestion, I personally think it would sound a lot better than the Infinity, and should sound better than a polk. If you want the same type of box, this is the way to go. Or, you could ditch that and remove the spare and jack and get one of megabass' passenger stealths, made from MDF and can fit some 12" subs in it. Good luck.

This is true, for less than you'd give for the jl or mtx box, you could get one of mine for the passenger side of the car.

Well I just checked, the JL enclosure is also .60 cu ft and it's also made of some sort of plastic so I don't think I'll gain much from that..

I was looking at the boxes for the passeneger side , but I would like to keep the spare in the car.. Sure it's not much of a spare but it could still save my *** ...

I'm not really a fan of JL's speakers either... Definately better than the mtx, all that does is give me a headache, but in my opinion JLs are also on the "boomy" side. It's all personal taste I guess.

Dunno though, probably hard to find a speaker that will do really good in that odd shaped box... Maybe I can find a friendly stero place that'll let me "test drive" a couple in that box somewhere.

Now I just wish I could do something about that monsoon system, but I can't afford that right now, have to upgrade the system in the concorde first.
