• power window won't go

When I was driving home from work today, I had the windows down. I pulled into a parking lot to do some quick shopping and started rolling up the windows. The driver's side went up fine, but the passenger side stopped halfway up. It wouldn't go up or down, even when I tried using the passenger side controls. I locked the T-tops, removed the stereo face plate, and said a prayer that people wouldn't mess with my car. I came back about 15 min later and it worked fine. I don't want this happening again - next time it might start raining.

Any suggestions what this could be? My driver's side window did the same thing last year and I had to get the dealer to fix it - they had to order a part and about 3 weeks after I first went in it was fixed. Maybe if I do it myself it'll be quicker.

    Thanks, Rob

If you wait a few seconds then try again does it move up a little more? Like the window motor needs some rest time? If so, your window motor is on it's last legs. Pick one up from autozone and install it yourself using the guide in our Mod Ency. However, if sometimes you press the switch and nothing happens, your switch might have broken. I had my driver's side switch break. It's a plastic toggle, breaks easy. Unplug the broken one, plug in the new one.

I thought it might have been the switch, but the passenger side switch didn't work either. Also, I'm not sure it's the motor - it just stoped entirely like someone had unplugged the motor. After that 15 min rest, it went up and down fine like normal.

I'm starting to think it may be the motor too now. I found the guide to replace it through the mod encyc. here. About how long does this take to do on your own (if you've never removed the door panel yourself or replaced a window motor yourself)?

Question 2: What kind of warenty is on this from the factory? When my car had ~15k they fixed the driver's side under warenty. I don't want to have to do this myself if I don't have to, but I don't want to pay out my *** to have someone else do it.

Same thing happened to my driver side window (good thing i have EZ-Pass)

it was the motor. drove it to the dealers where I got the car originally.. got it back the next day...

cost $0 since my car is pretty new (2002) so everything is still covered...

              Rob,

It's your motor. They overheat so quickly before they die that you have to wait a few minutes to move the window again. The problem with f-body doors is that the glass is EXTREMELY heavy. The motor can only hold out for a few years.

The solution is to buy an aftermarket motor. Either Auto Zone or Oreilly's will sell you one for about $70 with a lifetime warranty. It will probably die again in another 4-5 years, but then next time around, the motor will be free.

The install is pretty straightforward, except you have to drill a rivet out. Do a search, there's tutorials floating around the net.

Droped it off at the dealer today on the way to work (still under warenty, so it was free). They replaced the motor (you guys were right) and now the driver's side seems slow . The only problem is somehow they messed up the alignment of the window - when it's rolled up completely, the back end of the window is about 1/4" higher than it's supposed to be, so the window won't close completely and now has a small amount of tape around the edges so the rain won't get in :( . Looks like it's going back to the dealer tomorrow so they can fix their screw up .

Dead window motors and leaky window seals. Welcome to the wonderful world of f-cars.
