8 gauge wire too thin for 1600 watt amp?

Currently I have a 4 gauge power wire going into my 600 watt Kenwood amp... I have a sony xplod 1600 watt mono amp that I want to use in place of the kenwood. I bought some extra wire but its an 8 gauge... I want basically extend my wire another 2 feet or so and I wanted to know if using the 8 gauge would be too small for the 1600 watt amp (the sensitivity/levels wont be turned up past half because I have crappy subs and it will blow it). If it is too small then I will just buy some more 4 gauge and an inline fuse holder to connect the two together.

Model number on the amp? I'm betting that 1600W is a peak rating....and still probably a little high....

Yeah, I agree. And I think the 8 should be fine.

don't go with the sony amp. they are not good amps. stick with the kenwood or get yourself a better amp. You'll be glad that you did.

i have a bridged rockford fosgate 800 a2... Should be at 800rms. Im using 8 guage haha. Works fine for me. Its pushes my 15 L7 just fine.

I think I remember you posting about that amp before, the one that uses three 40-amp fuses or something like that?

I think you could get away using the 8-awg since you only need such a short piece. The fuse holder you mentioned wouldn't work because the biggest fuse you would be able to put in that would be 60-amp I beleive. I would just buy a simple non-fused distribution block like THIS to add on the 8-awg wire. Your amp will be protected because you should already have a fuse on the 4-awg wire up front where it connects to your battery. I'd use a 120-150amp fuse.

With three 40 amp fuses, that could easily be 1600WRMS..... out of Sony's Xplod line....you sure about that?

I found an old post she made about the amp but the Ebay link doesn't work anymore. Its the red hexagon shaped heatsink I do believe. Got that model number yet Casket? [img]smile.gif[/img]
