• quick custom sub box question

hey guys, just a quick question. I am making my enclosure finally and it is goin well. what i did was make my enclosure but i dropped the sub opening 3 inches from the surface because i am going to put plexy glass flush with the enclosure surface over the dropped sub. my question is that since the top of the sub isnt open to the air, would that hurt my sound output

Pretty confused as to what you're trying to do, but I think I've got it. Basically the front of the sub will be firing into a sealed box. (wood and plexi top)Is that correct? Is this custom box you're making a sealed or vented design? If sealed, yes. Obviously your sound output would be hurt....lost in fact. You've just sealed your sub inside a box.....lol If vented, yes and no. Having the front of the sub sealed off, while the rear side using the port would turn your box into a bandpass design. Bandpass boxes usually play a very slim range of frequencies very loud. They are also very critical of error. If you screw up on the design, you could easily run the risk of damaging your subwoofer. Either way, I'm sure you were not intending on do that. If I'm visualizing this correctly, I suggest you re-think your design.

yea, sounds like a bandpass box...
you could always drill a bunch of holes in the plexi glass to keep it a regular box...

Something tells me that the plexi is only like 11"x11" if it's a 10" sub. How cool would that look with 50 holes drilled in it? lol If you insist on doing something like this, I say just cut the plexi into a thin "X" or "cross" shape. Would still look pretty cool if done properly.
