another quick custom sub box question

ok, so Ive decided that i am not going to close off the top of the sub with plexi glass and will keep it open to air. My first question is could i use the ported opening from the box the sub came with? (The box the sub came with is a different shape but i am guessing about the same volume of air inside) or should i just keep the box sealed? my second question, since I am only making the enclosure for one 12" sub I will have room on either side of the sub box. would it be possible to put a small speaker on either side of the sub? If so, what would u guys suggest?? also, if u guys could direct me to a site or link as to how to wire speakers that would be great. I have the sub all wired up but am gonna need some help on wiring these speakers if i am gonna do it. Thanx for all your help guys

I think you're trying to bite off more then you can chew. Leave the box sealed. And add a small speaker to the box? You mean like a co-axil? No. No. No. Hell no. Your sub would beat the cr@p out of that little thing.

naw bro.....i am not that dumb......I mean there is gonna be space on the surface of the enclosure on either either side of sub. that is where i would put the small speakers, not on the actual sub box. looking from the top, it would be the 12 in the center and either side of it would be two small speakers.

actually..what make and model sub are you using?..sub volume requirements can change a LOT depending on whether or not the box is sealed or ported..if the volume of your box is about the volume of what this sub recommends for a sealed box i would leave it sealed..but if it is a bit larger i would suggest porting it to get the best sound out of it..especially since you are saying that the box you built has about the same amount of volume as a box you bought..which i am going to guess is a type 2 ported box

yea its a rockford fosgate 12er, 4ohm, 1.5 coil, 400w. a guy on the board looked it up for me saying that the recommended volume is 1.25 cubic feet (not sure if that is a sealed or ported volume) but the recommended volume he gave is about the same size as the box it came in and that one was ported. play it safe and keep it sealed or port it?

Porting any given box doesn't mean he'll get "better sound". It has to be correctly built. You can't just make a sealed box, then just decide to throw a couple of ports in there and make it into a vented design. AND you don't know anything about these(this) port(s)! Rectangle? Circle? How big are they? And what frequency will they tune your box to? How will his particular subwoofer react to being in a box with those specs? I'm afraid it's not that simple.

not porting ANY given box..porting the one he made..which from what he says..is about the same volume as the one he purchased for it.. 1.25 for a 12" sub sounds like a type 2 ported box..if its the same volume..same port..seems like he should be ok to me
