• I was dumb, what’s this wire?

Ok, first things first, I was dumb, I know it.

I wanted a new stereo in part because the stock decks CD is out, and in part cause I wanted MP3. ^_^

So I found a deck I liked, and HEY, BestBuy actually had the best price. So they offered a 4 year un-conditional warrantee. I said, hey, I break crap, sounds good.

Long story short, many times in the shop, stereo randomly reboots (ya! Reboots [Good buy… Hello…])

Got pissed, said take it out, they did. So, now I have the stock back in, and it started doing it! Not so bad as it turned on almost instantly.

So I opened up my dash, and looked, there are three plugs, the antenna, a speaker/power harness, and then one next to the antenna that they had neglected to plug back in. It has like four wires (think), one is un-shielded.

So I plugged it back in, basic test, seems to work (the rebooting thing takes time).

What is it??? Is it part of the amp?

Anyone have an idea of why the stereo would loose power then get it right back? This started AFTER BestBuy. Any they even tried putting in a bypass to avoid the harness.

----= Many more questions to come. ^__^ =----

    Oh, ya, 97 Camaro RS..

The plug they left unplugged is for an optional factory cd-changer which mounts in the back of the hatch.

As far as your stereo cutting out, it sounds like there's a bad connection somewhere. I would suggest inspecting the factory harness behind the stereo and look to see if either the Orange, Yellow or Black wires may be loose inside the plug. Did B.Buy cut and splice back together any factory wires that you can tell?

Just a splice when they bypassed the harness. SO they SHOULD have gotten past that issue (if they choose the auxiliary wire properly).

Red is the auxiliary power, right, wrong?

If it was the ground, or the primary power, the stereo would have cut out immediately (I would think), rather then saying goodbye (I SHOULD also have lost my presets, no?).

But that is great to know that is for a changer. I'll have to hunt the other end down.

Obviously a bad connection. Nda told you the most probable place to look. Inside the actual plug. How long ago since Best Buy touched it? I'd take that s#it RIGHT back to them. You said you had taken it back there several times before you told them to remove it. It was their install that knocked something out of place and they know it. Tell them they did a cr@ppy job in/uninstalling and now your stock headunit it doing the same thing. Let them hunt it down for free, while you chill inside watching Star Wars 3 on a 60" LCD screen. :D If they give you any lip, I wouldn't hesitate asking for the manager or manager's manager. You spent extra cash on their BS "un-conditional warrantee". They fudged it up, they know it, they fix it. Don't stand for that s#it from the "professionals".

I work at Best Buy (not in the mobile install bay) and I had them install a radio for me in my Stealth back when I started and I didn't realize how easy it was. It always cut out when I went over bumps and stuff and they told me it was overheating. This went on for a few weeks.

Finally I took it apart and found the ground wire was not properly connected to the head unit, and every bounce was causing it to cut out. A way to test this would be to pull the headunit out and pull/massage connection areas on the yellow, red, and black wires and see if you can get it to cut out. If it does, you've isolated the problem to one wire.

Ya, the only reason I let them do it was so they couldn't say "Did we do the install? Then we can't warntee it." BS.

Ya, I have to agree nda0602v6 the more I think about it. Sorry if I came off a bit... Ya.

So, as 96firebird311 said, I had a little conversation with them, and the dude that has been tring to fix the issue for me (NOT the original isntaller that f###ed it) is going to run whole new set of power leads at 6 tonight.

That's cool he's helping you out....as he should be though. But what is he planning on doing? Running new power leads?!?! Off the battery and then what? Crimp it into the harness? Sounds a little overboard to me. It's obviously a loose wire. Get their a$$'s in there and find it. Simple as that.
