  • Sub blown?

I have a Sony XLPOD amp that accepts high level frequencies for input, and I don't have a Monsoon system or an aftermarket head unit so this is the easiest/cheapest option for me.

Since I have blown out my rear speakers, I removed them, and used the wire to go into the amp for input.

I think hooked up a JL 12W6 off the amp, and no matter what I do I can't get bass to come out.

I've tried all the filters on the amp, played with all the settings, nothing.

If I physically try to put bass to it with a bassy song or using the equalizer on the stock Firebird HU, it sounds like ****.

I also tried the same thing with a friend's Rockford Fosgate amp, no difference.

ALSO- I tried a different time to tap into the rears with a line output converter, and go into the amp as RCA- but it sounded the exact same.

The sub sounds clear without bass, but if I add bass it sounds like *** .

    Someone help..

So you're using your speaker wires to get the signal to your amp right?

OK first off, ditch your factory HU, and get a decent aftermarket one. You will thank me, because the sound quality of an aftermarket HU is about 100xs better than the factory HU.

The reason it sounds like crap is because your taking a bad signal, and amplifying it. Garbage in, garbage out basically. The signal coming from the speaker wires isn't exactly what you want to amplify, they might sound fine normaly, but when you amplify it, your going amplify the distortions as well, do you get what I'm saying?

I think what will fix your problem is an aftermarket HU, and run RCAs to your amp.

No, the sub actually was blown. I'm borrowing a friends 10W3 hooked up exactly like I had it before and it hits hard as hell.

Yes u get distortion but not blowing from that setup I did it forever. The reason is High pass homie =P. Subs are made for low pass.

Speaker wire input is fine, I did it forever on my stock deck, however u will get Much better quality and control threw 6volt preouts =). The problem is High level input. U need low pass , low level input for a sub. thats y it eitehr died or sounds like shait.

It's got filters, it's a pretty good amp. It may not be INSANE sound quality but I don't really care- I have the Polks upfront and they sound REALLY nice but don't have any bass, so I just wanted to level out the system a bit.

I was never planning on replacing the headunit, I couldn't take that much money away from the turbo project, I would have sold the sub/amp and just said forget about it in that case.
