  • Problem swapping HU on monsoon

Hello, this is my first post. I've read through many posts on this board, and because of this I followed the directions and tried to replace the HU in my 2002 camaro. It has the monsoon system.

I bought the proper wiring harness and connected the wires and such, but when I connect the radio, the following happens.

Once I turn on power, the radio comes on and seems to function correctly. It has all the power, reads the disks, etc. And for the first 2-3 seconds, I get sound through the speakers. Then one by one, all four channels turn off in succession. After this, the radio appears to work fine, and in fact, if I turn the car off, wait a couple minutes (I'm assuming it's resetting) and turn it back on, I get the same 2-3 seconds of audio again, then the speakers shut off.

Does anyone have any idea why it does this? Once I reconnect the factory HU it works fine. In fact, I've got that reconnected now so that I have a radio. After reading the boards on here, and elsewhere, it appears many have just swapped out the HU on their monsoon system without any problems, so I am at a loss as to why mine won't. Did they change something in the final model year?

    Thanks for any help!

with the monsoon system, a total rewire is required in order to bypass the amp that comes with the monsoon. There is something you can buy that cancels out the monsoon amp though its called like a deck kit or something like that, its a special harness with some electronics in order to keep you from having to rewire but I dont remember what its called. I just rewired my whole car though.

Hmmm.... no special adapters are needed to upgrade to aftermarket headunit. Interesting. Lemme ask.... does it matter what volume you have the headunit set to? Keep the volume just barely audible and see what happens. Let us know.

I tried that, but it didn't make a difference, same exact 2-3 seconds and then shutdown of the speakers.

It's strange. I followed the directions on the wiring from the FAQ here on this BB, and I did get sound, for that 2-3 seconds. And the power is obviously working to the headunit.

I'm really stumped, and I don't want to rewire my car. That's beyond the amount of work I want to do to it.

I work at best buy and have only ahd this problem one time. Check all of your fuses first. Unless u have a built-in amp in the HU (which u dont) then you shouild be fine. I know in my 99 bird it swapped right in. Now putting in a remote start is a little trickier
