is yours a sony? thats one of the reasons i never went with sony because of how it skipped all the time, and how it would scratch cd's. i'm not sure on a fix. but i would second the idea of throwing it out a window at 90mph ;)

Please don't go with a Kenwood... Unless it's an Excelon! I had a Kenwood, and one of my friend's has one also. They skip a lot, and don't handle pot-holes in the street very well.
I personally like Panasonic, and Pioneer (the one with the awesome display). It's all preference, but I haven't had any problems with mine in over a year... my Kenwood, I had skipping problems as soon as I replaced my two 8's with two 12's(in my last car).
Also, it is mounted tightly, right? It does make a small difference, but some HU's just don't play well when big bass hits.

i dunno, it's weird, it's not skipping anymore
some suggestions to try before you toss it that I got were
put the wiring harness under it to support it
use the 3rd bracket in the back to secure it more
or get a spounge like material under it and have it hold it up (works really good)

I thought about this while the board was down and came to the conclusion that it's not only the skipping that's pissing me off.... my favorite morning AM talk sho gets some nasty buzzing in it ONLY on that station ONLY when the head unit warms up, and secondly, the face sticking shut now
A sponge might make it heat up quicker. Maybe a plastic or metal piece. The third bracket is a great idea... and it makes it harder for thieves... it also might give you enough time to catch that thief, and beat them with a bat or crowbar!
