• Building box for Tempest

Alright. My tempest is suppose to arrive here Wendsday so I'm trying to get a head start on my box. I took some measurements and and picture to try and let you see it.

Tell me what you think I should do. I would like to go ported, but this is my first box and i'm not sure how everything works with ported so you'd have to explain it all to me.

I got an error when i clicked on that link....

A quick crash course on ported boxes...... For all out SPL, you want to tune high. For all out SQ, tune low. To change the tuned frequency of the box, you make the port shorter or longer. Longer tunes lower. Shorter tunes higher. For SPL use you would want to tune to roughly 50-55Hz and for SQ use around the 26-30Hz area. For a little of each... some where in between! But it all depends on the actual woofer.

Anyhow, are you still going for all out SPL? Or are you going to use this as a daily driver as well? Ported boxes are not as hard as once thought, thanks to all the new box building programs out there now. Give me the max box size you can fit..... or want to give up.... and I will work up some measurements for you. Or download WinISD Pro from here and see for yourself!

Also, WinISD isin't that hard once you get used to it. First, click on new project. Then select you driver. The Tempest is already in there. Then step through the screens. It will plot a default graph that gives you the flatest possible response (great SQ) Click on the box tab, and then modifiy it to your measurements. Click on the port tab and change that up to your needs. Click on the picture of the circle to change to a rectangle port. Ehhh, it just takes some playing with.... you'll figure it out. I'll be back with some recommendations.

Ahhh convertible huh? Gonna be a little tough. Are you planning on building this yourself? I wonder if megabass will build you a ported box for a single Tempest.... for a vert! Mega? Ok, if you ARE going to try this yourself, here's my recommendation.... for a sealed set-up, 3.5 cubes before woofer displacement. That should give you a Qtc of .782. Which is pretty center. Should sound good. If you want a ported box, either 3 cubes tuned to 27Hz with a single 6 X 6 X 39.94" long port OR 3.5 cubes tuned to 27Hz with a single 6 X 6 X 33.53" long port. All measurements are without woofer or port displacement. Including both should be around the 4.2cube mark total. I tried to graph a box tuned a little higher, but it had a pretty nasty peak. Wouldn't sound too good for daily music use. Now the hardest part. Making a box that is the required amount of space AND have it fit in your car! Let see...... see if this fits..... length (red line) 31", height (yellow line) 20" and a width (blue line) 15.5 on top and as wide as you can on the bottom. (The trunk slants correct? My coupe does... ) That should give you just over 4 cubes.... but it is cutting it close. To get some extra space you can extend the length across the sides.... to make a "t" shaped box. See what I mean? hehehehehe I hope so. :D It's not going to be easy. I HATE building boxes for F-bodies. Like I said..... if Megabass can build you a box... BUY IT!! Save your self the time and heartache. It's not going to be easy.... Tell me what you think....

Sorry, i don't have enough money to buy one. I'll have to make my own. I'm gonna go to lowes soon and see how much 3/4 MDF is.
