  • Rear window defogger quit working

My rear window defogger quit working Saturday. I press the button and nothing will happen. It doesn't click or light up when I try to turn it on. Has this happened to anyone else? Could it be the switch that went bad or is there some other type of electronic failure that could cause this?

    Thanks

It has a fuse, it has a 30 amp fuse, it's one of the big silver ones. Could be that, mine never has worked in mine and I checked the fuse and it didn't even have one so I put window fuse in it's placeand it worked. If you have power windows just swap the fuses and see if that fixes it.

the fuse/(really a circuit breaker) is getting worn out, and should be replaced.

Many people on ls1.com complain of that, some people replace the circuit breaker, with a fuse, and that is an option. But i would just go buy a new breaker, see if that fixes it.

Either way DO NOT just bypass the breaker.

no, the breaker is the silver box in the drivers side fuse panel.

            they are auto-resetting.

auto parts stores should have one, you can try swapping the one from the power windows to see if that will fix it.

yes, the silver thing is not a fuse, it is a circuit breaker. and it has a problem of only working for short periods as it gets old (sometimes brand new). just reiterating the previous post to affirm what was said.

i just put in a new breaker it seems to help, i still would like it to stay on longer.
viper go out and buy a 12v 30a breaker from any auto part shop. it should be labled but if not, open your door look at your fuse box in the lower right their will be the breaker (if you have power seats it will be the breaker on top) pull it out put the new one in and your done

I just switched the window fuse/breaker with the defogger and started it up to check it. The windows worked and the defogger still did not work. That leads me to think that the breakers are working and that it is something else?

camaro99 next time you turn on the defroster feel how hot the breaker gets, the way a breaker works is that the more amps go in to it it heats up a bar with copper on one side and steel on the other. when the copper gets hot it bends the bar pulling it away from the conntacts. what im saying is i dont know what the problem is but this may be it. try a fuse but make sure you turn it off because the breaker is what turns the defroster off. personaly i would not do this because i dont want to fry my defroster by leaving it on to long but it will tell you if the breaker is the problem good luck with figuring it out.

breakers normally are not used for the timing circuit.

are you sure that is the way GM designed it? I would not be suprised, as that would lead to the problems that people have, but the only way that it would work right, is to have the breaker undersized, so it trips.

Im guessing that the timing is done low current before the relay for the defroster in the AC controller. But i don't have wiring diagrams to verify. That is the proper operation. I did go to my car, took the breaker out, turned on the defroster, put breaker in, turned on, took breaker out, light went off, put breaker back in, light back on, repeated this 8 times, so i am fairly sure the breaker is NOT what is designed to turn the circuit off, it just does, when they get crappy.

breakers are not timing circuits. and no they are not the same as a turn signal, in a different function.

Breakers are designed to open a circuit, when the load becomes greater than the breaker is rated for, this is to protect the wiring only.

I went to the chevy dealer to check the price to get a new switch and they said it would be $177 to get a swich because it comes built in with the hvac controls. I have no clue what could be wrong with it and I don't really want to pay that much money for something that may or may not fix it.

                              btw...the breaker is working
