security light

this is really pissing me off, I don't know how much the dealer is going to charge me to fix this or is there a cheaper way to do it.
Yesterday when I was coming home from school I parked the car and then 5 mins later decided to go back out, I put in my key and the security light starts flashing and when I tried turning on the car, nothing happens, it just restarts the panel like I was engaging it again. I tried turning the car on , putting the key in different ways and even tried my other set of keys, nothing worked, the car turned on 15 mins later and the light shut off, but when I went back after I went to the mall, the car wouldn't turn on again. Right now its at my parking space. What do you guys think?? Is it that I need new keys?? or is it the ignition thing, or the computer??

funny... I had the exact same thing everytime i started my car when I had it, later I found out that the aftermarket alarm was doing this... we yanked that alarm out, now its all good [img]smile.gif[/img]

well the thing is that i don't have an alarm at all. The factory didn't give me one and I haven't even thought about purchasing one. Thanks for trying though, anyone else got any suggestions?

hmm maybee its the littel chip in the key...havce you tried your spare set, (if you have them) if not just try wiggling it around inside there or something ;) :D

well this happened to me last summer, i tried the spare keys and wiggled it and it worked fine till now, the only thing was that the security light remained on every time i drove. Both keys started to work until this week, so the chip is the problem.

Ive heard of this happening alot. The usual problem is that the chip on the key or the contacts inside the ignition cylinder are dirty and just need cleaning. I believe its rubbing alcohol that you can clean them with. Just use a q-tip and rub it on the chip. I dont know how hard it is to get to the contacts on the ignition cylinder though. The only strange thing is you said you spare key didnt work either so I wouldnt think it would be the chip. I would try to clean the ignition cylinder contacts before I paid a dealer to look into it. Sorry I couldnt give anymore help.

thanks for the help, i am gonna try and clean the ignition part then. I don't know waht i am gonna use cause its a little small, will I have to reset or reprogram the computer in the car since the security light turned on?

the same thing has been happening to me for over 5 months...

I dont think its the key since it occurs even with auto-start with my VIPER ALARM

each time security light goes off i got to wait 3 minz, sometimes it turns on 3-4 times at a time so i got to way for a while..

my car did this and this is what a GM tech told me.

The wire to the sensor in the ing switch is very brittle, so when you tilt your colum alot it starts to break the wire. If you tilt the colum all the way up and wiggle it a little, you should be able to start the car. In my case it worked.
Anyway an easy fix is buy a new switch and get another key coded the same as the one you already have. Locate the wire harness going to the VATS on the ing cylinder in your car and hook that wire up to your new ing switch. Use a wire tie to secure the other ing switch under your dash.
That is a lot easier than replacing the whole switch.

I am 87.6% sure that what 98v6RedCamaro said is your problem. This happened to me earlier this year, and the Stealer (oops Dealer) told be about the orange wire that sits behind the ignition cylinder and everytime you start your car, it eats away at the wire until it breaks.
