UGH need help!

OK, I tried to install a new HU in my '00 camaro with the monsoon system, but it wouldn't power up. I thought that the wire harness that i bought might be wrong, so i cut both harnesses and wired directly. When the wiring was finished, the HU started smoking when i turned on the car. I didn't know what was going on, but i rewired all of the speakers, thinking that the monsoon amp may have been giving it some sort of feedback. I finished that last night. Today, I bought a really nasty 30 dollar HU to test the wiring since i didn't want to bust my 400 dollar Alpine that i just bought. STill nothing........the HU wont power up, but this time it didn't smoke, either. I am very confused because I've tested both the power and the ground wires, and they are both functioning properly. So i cannot figure out why the HU's will not power up! Should I try to wire the power and ground from scratch? If so, how should I do it? If anybody has any idea, please help me out here. Thanks.

what i did to avoid paying the $50 harness. Is i just cut off the factory harness, i looked for the 2 power wires, the constant and the remote. Then i grounded it, and it powered right up. As far as speakers i have a 4 ch amp so i just ran some new speaker wire to all speakers then to the amp.

I did the same thing, pretty much. Only problem is, when i hooked it all up, the HU started to smoke and a fuse blew out. I used the wire to color guide in the mods encyclopedia, so i hope it right.
